Flag-jacking the Canadian flag

Flag-jacking the Canadian flag
Furious Canadians clap back at American travelers hopping on hated ‘flag-jacking’ trend: ‘Selfish’

"Faux Canada!

American travelers hoping for more favorable treatment overseas are choosing to hide behind the Canadian flag — arousing ire north of the border.
Their behavior is part of a popular trend known as flag-jacking — which sees tourists abroad displaying the flag of another country on their bag or clothing, as a way to disguise where they’re really from."

“The Canadian flag is not some magical device that makes people forget which country invented monster trucks, or deep fried butter, or war for profit,” he joked.

Maffin also tut-tutted at attempts to mimic the country’s distinct dialect — saying you can always tell an imposter when, for example, they pronounce the second “t” in “Toronto.”

“Americans have been stealing goodwill by pretending to be Canadian and giving Canadians bad reputations by still acting like Americans abroad for decades,” a commenter said.

“We’re not livid, its just kind of pathetic,” another explained.
“If anything, we’re probably a bit flattered as it reaffirms our belief that we’re more well liked around the world than Americans,” someone chimed in.

Flag-jacking isn't new, but it has pissed me off every time it raises it's cowardly head. Don't get me wrong as Tod Maffin say's in the below short, it's kind of flattering... for a moment.

We know why Americans do it, they've been doing on and off  since the 70s, but now it's starting toooooo reeeaaalllllyyy piss me off.

So I'm going to get this flag/patch... for when I go abroad.

Also I'm just curious if any of you all from other nations have heard of either your countrymen or those coming to your country using flag-jacking?

It's news to me. When abroad I announce myself as American, and do my best to counter the all-too-often true stereotypes about us, by being polite and considerate.

As Willie Nelson says, "Well, that would be one in a row..."  Thumbs Up The phrase "Ugly American" has been around a long time, for a reason. You'd be one of the few exceptions. I would, too, if I cared to travel. My attitude on that is, if I'm going to get my pocket picked, I'd rather be close to home. On that note, my wife and I went to her 50th High School reunion. I stopped by the bar and sampled Tito's Hand-Crafted vodka. I picked up the shot glass, and it had serious heft. I knocked it back, and told the bartender that I won't ever buy another, given that most of that shot glass was GLASS. $12 for about half a shot. Dodgy At least it wasn't watered down.

Never got my pocket picked. Protip: put your wallet in a front pocket.

The best bit about putting your wallet in your front pocket is the free reach around.   Tongue

I first heard about this back in the 90s. I've always thought it odd how some people are so embarrassed of their country that they'd fly a false flag.

Oh, and I pronounce both Ts in Toronto. That's mostly an Ontarian dialect. Muricans are dead easy to spot abroad though. They're the ones that haven't clued to the fact that you're a Canadian.

I found that making an effort in the local language goes a long way to dispel that ugly furriner reputation. My Spanish has opened up all sorts of conversations and genuine goodwill. Before we go to Europe again I will do an immersion in at least one of the languages we would visit.
I know that English is very commonly spoken in Germany, for example, but not so much in former East Germany. I ran into that on our cruise. The old guys at that tugboat did not speak a lick of it.
You Canadians can just piss off with the French shit though.
I'll learn it for France, maaaaaaybe Smile

Troof. When I deployed to Spain, I knew nothing of the language, but on arrival I took lessons on-base and bought a Berlitz dictionary, and spoke in Spanish as much as possible. Don't get me wrong, there was much smirking and laughing at my paltry efforts, but I think those paltry efforts still earnt me goodwill.

To me, it was simply a matter of respect. "I'm in your country, I will do my best to speak your lingo" thing. I think that vibe translated better than the words themselves.

All of this sounds like good material for a South Park episode. They're always ripping on Canada or the Canadians.  Chuckle

Well, to take a joke made by South Park: "the Simpson did it". Lisa Simpson once used a Canadian flag on her backpack during their trip in Brazil to which Bart replied that Homer would sell her ruse out; the focus then turn to Homer who is shoving people aside rudely to pick up his American flag while chanting USA over people's luggage.

Aussies can always tell whether a tourist is Canadian
or American—obviously by the way they invariably
mispronounce English words.

A Canadian will say "We have several wi-fi points aboot the hoos" for example.
And Americans will always talk about a laboratory whilst pronouncing it like lavatory.

There's a dozen others I can't think of now though.

... Oh yes; from American TV cooking shows we have 'erbs for herb.    Shake
We don’t drop the h for 'ouses or 'orses or 'egseth do we?

I'm a creationist...   I believe that man created God.

Canadians from the country have those pronunciations but not areas like Toronto or Vancouver.  There’s a variety of accents in Canada…some just slightly different and some much more so.  You can’t nail down one or two words and claim they’re American.  Some American cities sound more like Canadians than those from other areas…like Wisconsin and Minnesota.
