Last time I saw that look of pure malevolence, my stepmom's cat later came back inside with blood in the fur. 
She was a monster but I loved her.

Predators usually win.  I once read that predators just want dinner but prey want to live.  I've reconsidered that.  Prey don't know they can die and their food is everywhere.  You don't have to be very smart to eat plants.  But predators get hungry and hunger will drive you to do almost anything.
