My choice?

'Devil with a Blue Dress On' exceeded any of the tweenie pop stuff the Beatles were
literally churning out in the early sixties.  This version was released in 1966, after its
original Shorty Long version in 1964 which, strangely, flopped.

Note the drumming by Johnny Badanjek, who's still performing at age 76.

My runner up 1964 hit;  The Rolling Stones "Time Is On My Side".

My top 10 of 1964:

House of the Rising Sun
Leader Of The Pack
The Girl From Ipanema
A World Without Love
Under the Boardwalk
She's Not There
I Only Want to Be With You
Everybody Loves Somebody
Dancing in the Street

And just because it was so weird to hear Lorne Greene speaking "not on Bonanza" (and because my younger brother loved the song), Ringo...

And I really hated The Beatles back then.  "Garbage bubble-gum" music...

Paul McCartney wrote A World Without Love for Peter and Gordon, since Peter Asher was his girlfriend Jane's brother.  He also wrote two other songs for the group.

As for the Beatles, they got better....   Sun

I've read about "who wrote what for whom" and it is very enlightening. I once wrote a rap song (inappropriate for my blog) and sent it to another person, who sent it to a friend who used it. Bands have branded styles and song-writers are sometimes more creative than their own band can use. Have you ever watched 'American Pop'?

I loved The Beatles in their later years. Some of the best music ever done. But "for all time" Stairway to Heaven does it for me. Dylan is in a place all to himself...

My daily music, though, is Simon&Garfunkle, Mamas & Pappas, and Cher.

According to Wikipedia, these were the top 20 songs of 1964 per Billboard Magazine:

1 "I Want to Hold Your Hand" The Beatles
2 "She Loves You" The Beatles
3 "Hello, Dolly!" Louis Armstrong
4 "Oh, Pretty Woman" Roy Orbison
5 "I Get Around" The Beach Boys
6 "Everybody Loves Somebody" Dean Martin
7 "My Guy" Mary Wells
8 "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" Gale Garnett
9 "Last Kiss" J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers
10 "Where Did Our Love Go" The Supremes
11 "People" Barbra Streisand
12 "Java" Al Hirt
13 "A Hard Day's Night" The Beatles
14 "Love Me Do" The Beatles
15 "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" Manfred Mann
16 "Please Please Me" The Beatles
17 "Dancing in the Street" Martha and the Vandellas
18 "Little Children" Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas
19 "Love Me with All Your Heart (Cuando Calienta El Sol)" The Ray Charles Singers

I really don't care for most of the 1964 songs, though if I had to pick one I would say "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys.

Top 10 was never my favorites (for just being there).  And some of those popular songs offended my sense of "righteousness".

I was also a BIG Ventures fan later...

For all I know, you're 14 years my senior, but I remember them all too. Not from 1964 when I was just one year old, but from the 60ies. I have a brother being your age and the radio and record player were always running loudly.

Of this list I like 17 best.

My least favorite song is #11. I enjoy most of the musicals I've played, but Funny Girl just sucks.

I have learned that the best food for lawn grass is mulched lawn grass. After all, what does grass need most but itself? Given that, aren't we the best and most balanced food for each other?

Yeah, but she had a "Voice". She and Cher were both great with similar ranges. I once had the pleasure of attending a local theater in NH that didn't cast Streisand there when youngish.

I don't mind 60's music but it all sounds a bit samey to me. I much prefer 70's, music, maybe because I was a child of the 70's and grew up with it.

If you're talking about '70 to '76, agreed. If you're talking '76 and onwards, I'd have to pick my raisins. In hindsight, still much better than what's on the radio today, with a few exceptions, but back then, we hated it.

1967 was my first year in college and the number one hangout was a raunchy bar.  Everyone went there and it is where I met my wife and we were talking about it for some reason a couple of days ago and she mentioned a song called The Letter.  I looked it up on Wiki to see how many weeks it was #1 because in that September it played constantly on the bar's juke box.  Anyway, I clicked on a link which took me to a youtube link of it and now my Youtube feed is full of all these 1960's collections.

It's making me feel very fucking old.

Still, it is odd that all these years later, I still recall all these lyrics.  Memory is a funny thing.

Send me a ticket for an aeropolane
ain't got time to take a fast train
Lonely days are gone, I am coming home
My baby just wrote me a letter

I think I know this one since the day it first aired. Without understanding the lyrics. That's why my parents sent me to take private english classes with some of my classmates from primary. English classes still weren't a thing in primary in the late 60ies, early 70ies.

I had an instant affinity for the Beatles song "She Loves You" the first time I saw it, and it was a huge factor in me finally "getting" music and in wanting to become a musician myself. Up to that point in my life (age 6 and a bit), I had an actual fear of music. I blame the pipe organ at my brother's christening - I was so scared I refused to go into the church.

(There was only one other song I had heard and liked before "She Loves You," but I can't remember the song or artist. I vaguely remember a male singer and a female singer, and that's it.)

The "best of the best" are probably ALL a bit whacko. Actors, singers, athletes. And wow, Bobby Fischer!

BTW, I finally understand why actors demand things like "no red M&Ms". It means someone actually read the contract!

The list has one of my favorite Beatles songs in "I Feel Fine", and another old favorite, HotRS from the Animals. Aside from the Beatles and the Supremes, I don't really care for much music from that year. I almost forgot, he mentioned the Kinks with "You Really Got Me", which is a great slice of riff-rock. But most of it seems far too middle-of-the-road for my taste.

I think the Beatles themselves got a lot more interesting in 1965, but I can still hear their talent in their earlier stuff.

ETA: He also missed "Cantaloupe Island" from Herbie Hancock, a favorite jazz standard of mine:

Alas, that is incorrect -- My phonographic memory just queued up the Fab Four singing "Sie liebt dich, ja, ja, ja..."   Panic  I think it was a bonus track on one of the CD re-packagings of the '60s albums.
