Am I the only one who often can't help but laugh when news like this comes out? Maybe my funny bone just has a soft spot for farcical hypocrisy, but for some reason, I've noticed that my first reaction to stuff like this has lately tended to be at least a chortle or two.

However, it's not the sole province of religion either. Back where I used to live in Illinois there was a sports coach who was popular with the boys because he let them use his basement for sexual assignations with their GFs. Problem was, he filmed all of the sexual activity and beat off to it later from his extensive video library.

Is a pastor more of a hypocrite than a basketball coach for doing the same thing? Arguably yes. But let's not imagine that if all the churches closed down, everyone would suddenly quit being asshats. People would just find new ways to be shitty to each other.

"A Baptist minister in Texas who came to national attention in 2016 when he praised the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., resigned from his ministry last week after allegedly using drugs, gambling and paying for sex with prostitutes.

Donnie Romero, who founded the Stedfast Baptist Church in Fort Worth in 2014, told congregants at a church meeting on Jan. 2 that he had not “been ruling my house well.”

As the saying goes, the only thing wrong with baptists is that they don't hold them under long enough!

Shameless phonies.

I started to respond to this and then felt sort of guilty about it. First of all, the Pastor who praised the gunman was obviously an idiot. On the other hand, I thought the closing statement of the poster was amusing. (Holding the baptists under long enough.) That seemed to me kind of hypocritical, even though one was based upon real events and the other was humor. Same sentiment.

Take that for what it is, but from a recent Bible student, the placing of religious leaders upon a pedestal is asking for trouble. We all sin. We all fall short.

No, but the church wouldn't be trying to hide his crimes like they do for priests, ministers, etc.

No, instead the university would be trying to hide his crimes.   All institutions look to protect themselves and fuck the victims.  The only difference is that basketball coaches do not claim to be the guardians and arbiters of morality.

And I hate basketball anyway.

Wow, started when the kid was 9. That's a new low (well okay, probably an old low, if the truth were known).

I wonder if part of the generative mindset for this kind of thing in the weird and wildly unrealistic and self-serving and paternalistic sexual thinking of evangelicals. Take the notion of a perfectly "pure" and submissive wife and combine it with the fact that you can only get a total absence of "uppity" and ease of control with very young girls? Someone who feels they have no choice and could be groomed to imagine that this bloated late middle age Bible thumper is some kind of catch and a privilege to cater to? Probably with not-too-subtle insinuations that god would be Very Displeased if she has any reservations about the relationship.

Yuck.

And yet ... they are already circling the wagons rather than letting it sink in that while this guy was "ministering to" them and telling them all about the will of god, he was fucking a child. Not to mention cheating on his wife and probably lying up a storm to keep it covered up. For years his parishioners have gone home from church remarking on what a man of god this was and how inspiring his sermon was that day. And there's probably going to be almost no existential crises over this. For the pastor (because he was caught), his wife (because she is publicly humiliated) and the victim's parents (for obvious reasons), sure. At least temporarily, until everyone convinces them that they should turn the other cheek and pray for this perp, who after all, was just a victim of a Satanic attack because of his exalted station as a pastor.

And the poor child ... already I'm sure the insinuations are spreading that she "led him on".

It scares me how well I understand their playbook. Seen it too many times.

Grooming? I wonder how they define and prove that. I like that it's considered criminal at least.

That said ... I had to really suppress the urge to joke about how some people are not guilty of the other kind of grooming, and should be ...

Goodman's 71-year-old father has very few dying wishes.

Apparently, the anchor does NOT hold.

From the song lyrics: "... the anchor holds, and grips the solid rock. This rock is Jesus ..."

The whole idea of that song is that one of the value propositions of the faith is that it anchors and centers you in the protective arms of your savior. But only if you believe the correct things! And your children believe the same things!
