Aussie Mothers' Day

Aussie Mothers' Day
My mum is long gone, but I’d just like to wish all the
current mothers here a warm and peaceful day, and
suggest you take a well-earned bow for so often being
the core of happy families.

Aussie Mothers' Day
Mother’s Day is tomorrow here and the kids are bringing pizza (my flavor choices) and hugs and kisses. It’s all I could ever want!

I had two sessions of mothering…first my two children, then two of my grandkids living with with us. I also count my third granddaughter who lost her mother at 8 years old. I never expected to have to explain menstrual periods and buying her first bras….i was happy to do it even if it was never planned. I’ve done a lot of mothering!

Aussie Mothers' Day
My mom died of cancer four years ago and my gf's mom died three weeks ago. This is not a good time for us.

Aussie Mothers' Day
Anna Maria Jarvis [b.1864] was the primary advocate
for establishing Mother’s Day in 1908 as a holiday in
the United States (where else LOL), commemorated
annually on the second Sunday of May.  Woodrow Wilson
designated Mother’s Day as a US national holiday in 1914.

Yet today, the original sentiment of Mother's Day seems
lost in a sea of sale signs and endless advertisements, all
promising the "perfect" gift to show our appreciation.

The overwhelming commercialism in Australia of this day
makes it increasingly difficult for those of us who no longer
have our mothers with us to fully participate. The pressure
to celebrate with “the perfect gift” or the “perfect day” is a
reminder that there is a void in our lives that can never be
filled by a bouquet of flowers.

Mother’s Day didn’t begin this way.    It wasn’t originally about
what could be bought or posted on social media. It was created
to honour all mothers from a place of deep love and reflection;
a love that doesn’t require gifts, and reflection that doesn’t need
to be loud.

From one of Australia's largest big-box national retailers...

Quote:Want to spoil your mum on their special day? Making your mum feel
special does not need to break the bank! Show your love with the perfect
Mother’s Day gift from our wide selection of tech and home appliances.

And their 2026 ad...

Who gives their mother a fucking pizza oven for Mother's Day?    Facepalm

I don’t think everyone here actually buys into the overboard gift buying. Most just make sure they visit their moms or bring a lunch/dinner over. The stores want to make it more but I doubt theirs tons of folks buying into it.
