The Pet Peeves Thread
What are your personal pet peeves? The little things that really annoy you?
For me, the biggest is when someone using a weight machine at the gym exercises with one arm at a time. Just use both arms and double the weight! You're holding up things for other people who want to use the machine! Similarly, when someone on a weight machine takes a long time texting on their phone or just when people take over ten minutes to use a single function machine in general.
Others include: Reckless and/or aggressive drivers. When people fail to use the proper capitalization or punctuation on their posts. When my cat likes to chew on my laptop's power cord and unplugs it in the night. Stupid little ants in my kitchen (I'm on the third floor, where do they come from? Do they have a nest in the walls?) People who talk about astrology. Whistling. I'll add more as I think of them.

(I used a bug icon because it's things that bug you)

I don't have too many. Being made to repeat myself is pretty much tops, along with people who get on the freeway doing 30 mph. It's a goddamn freeway, get your ass in gear already.

Do NOT get me started on sloppy language. Do you not know what "mind" means? If no, then don't freakin'' ask.

Here's a good one: obvious men voicing women in TV shows. Bob's Burgers is the worst offender of this.

When people say "everything happens for a reason". So tell me the grand reason some children die from cancer? It's just a lie people tell themselves for their own comfort.

Work pet peeve: sometimes there are no ladders at our workstations and I have to walk around to find one. Then I have to push it to my station myself. I think it happens because the maintenance people need them, but they don't always bring them back. Still annoying though.

When people say "that's how the author/director intended it", when someone makes a criticism of a film or book. Neato! Does that mean I have to like or agree with every single thing an author or director does? Nope, that would be ridiculous and would imply I have to like or agree with every single piece of media just because it was the creator's intent. So what? It's totally irrelevant to the criticism the majority of the time.

Oh and I hate "if someone is good with animals, that means they're a good person!" this one is common on reddit. If you do a few seconds of Googling you'll find there are numerous examples of killers who love or were affectionate with animals, and it's not always the case that all killers hate animals.

When people don't properly order the videos in their playlists on youtube. This is enough to make me skip watching videos that I otherwise might check out. Why should I watch your content if you don't even care enough to organize your channel?

Authors who are careless with their wording. Currently reading the book How We Die and this annoyed me:
"When a would-be suicide hooks up one end of a hose to an automobile's exhaust pipe..."
Referring to a person as "a would-be suicide"? Just doesn't sound right to me. How hard is it to write "potential suicide victim" or something like that?

I don't like "potential suicide victim", as the word "victim" seems to strip the suicidal person of his or her agency. "Would-be suicide" is a bit clunky to be sure, you're very right. I'd just practice simplicity and write "when a suicidal person" etc.
But to your larger point, yes, craftless writers annoy the shit out of me.

Yeah, it might just be annoying enough for me to move onto another book.

"Would-be" sounds fine to me. It implies—obviously—that the person intended
to take their own life, but in this particular case was ultimately unsuccessful.
Like a would-be doctor who failed their final year medical degree.
