Israeli strikes kill Iran’s top military leaders and prompt retaliation

Israel launched a wave of strikes across Iran on Friday that targeted its nuclear program and military sites, killing at least two top military officers and raising the prospect of an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.

Didn't Trump pull people out of the area just days prior?

You didn't feel this deserves its own thread BB? I mean, EVERYTHING is world news, except JWST news etc.

I mean, I think I agree with Dex's post. I think they're maybe pointing out that the title seems to imply that you intend this thread for all world news. And I think that's already what the whole subforum is for.

This particular event is interesting, though.
Is this sig thing on?

Thor is one of my favorite mythological gods. And used to be a great Marvel character. Odin explaining to Thor that his hammer is just a "focus" of his power (in a movie) was great! "Are you the God of Hammers?" is a great line...

I'm not sure where to go from there. Unless someone wants to start a Marvel Universe thread... I'm no trivia expert, but I go back far enough to have had the original stories in my hands at 10 or 12 cents per issue... Angel

Frankfurt Germany:

A doctor (40) from Syria was sentenced to life without parole. In 2015 he came from Syria to Germany and worked as an orthopedist. He was convicted of torture (9), murder (2) and crimes against humanity for Assad in 2011/2012. Witnesses recognized him in a TV docu about Homs.

"The defendant enjoyed inflicting physical pain on people who seemed inferior to him", the judge said. The syrian regime tried to influence the trial until its end in 2024.

A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine
in the month leading up to the Friends star's overdose
death in October 2023 has agreed to plead guilty.

Dr Salvador Plasencia agreed to change his plead to guilty

who supplied the fatal dose to Perry.  She's currently in prison
awaiting trial and could face life imprisonment.

Iran has banned government officials and their security
personnel from using all communication devices linked to
the internet.

The ban, announced yesterday, includes mobile phones,
smart watches and laptops.

Iran did not elaborate on the reason for the ban, which was
reported by the semi-official Fars news agency.  However, it
suggests Iran suspects Israel used digital signatures from
electronics to launch its strikes.

From what I've read, Putin has signaled quite clearly to Trump that he doesn't want this for various reasons including that Iran buys or transports a lot of his oil and he has hundreds of Russian technicians and scientists working in those facilities. In addition, going to war appears to be fracturing the MAGA coalition.

But Trump wanted this so badly he could taste it, for his usual narcissistic reasons -- to play tough guy and to play with bombs, basically. To distract from his failures at home, etc.

This is epically dumb on just about every level.

I'm a bit of a fence-sitter on this. On one hand, Iran with nuclear missles would be worse than N Korea with them. N Korea is really centered on S Korea for specific political reasons. They really just want to take over S Korea. But Iran's crazy leaders are more outwardly focussed on general terrorism and elimination of a theism they abhor. To me, that suggests they are more willing to go to greater efforts and risks.

Iran simply cannot have nuclear weapons...

On the other hand, I read various opinions of how close Iran is to having functional nuclear weapons (next month, 2 years, etc). Iran getting from the current 60% enrichment to bomb-usable 90% is uncertain as to time. And there may be ways to prevent that other than direct war. Iran is sufferring military losses and sanctions are choking their economy (such as there is one).

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control, Department of State, and Department of the Treasury (all I checked) websites say that Iran's economy, military, and foreign networks are collapsing. That's a good thing for the world. So maybe just let it continue.

Meanwhile, the US participation in the assault on Iran's nuclear facilities has begun. i will await the morning news for evaluation of the success of this action...
