Police used AI facial recognition to arrest a Tennessee woman for crimes committed in a state she says she’s never visited

A Tennessee grandmother spent more than five months in jail after police used an AI facial recognition tool to link her to crimes committed in North Dakota – a state she says she’d never been to before.

Researchers with the Census of Marine Zooplankton first discovered the squidworm in 2007 during a cruise in a remotely operated vehicle some 1.8 miles underwater. The funky-looking fish is named for the 10 appendages protruding from its head, which look like tentacles. The squidworm uses these to collect debris falling from the open waters above, known as “marine snow.”

Mount Everest guides have been accused of secretly drugging foreign climbers to trigger expensive aerial evacuations as part of a $20m (£15m) insurance fraud scheme, according to an investigation by the Nepali police.

Operators of mountain rescue companies in Nepal have been arrested as part of the police operation, and a police spokesperson told The Independent that a total of 32 people have been charged and 11 arrests made so far.

The scale of the scam appears to be vast, affecting 4,782 international climbers between 2022 and 2025. Police said more than 300 cases of alleged fake rescues have been uncovered, with bills totalling nearly $20m charged to climbers and insurers.

The scandal has led to new scrutiny over tour operators and guides as this year’s spring climbing season got underway on 30 March. Investigators say the scam involved multiple actors across the trekking ecosystem, including sherpas, trekking company owners, helicopter operators and hospital executives.

Yes I have an elderly friend who I help out a lot. She can literally go many months without ever leaving her house or yard so it was really good for both of us to get out. I'm taking her to get cataract surgery next week.

Robert A. Heinlein fans may recall references to the "Church of the Divine Inseminator" in one or more of his stories.

Michael Ferguson, Tasmania's former deputy premier,
says he was driving home along the Midland Highway
last Thursday night when "my car struck a black cow
in the middle of my lane".  He posted to social media
that he was "safe" after the crash and quoted scripture
from the Bible.  The vehicle was a write-off.

"I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken,
for he is right beside me
," he said.  "No wonder my heart
is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. Psalm 16:8–9
."

University of Calgary sets record for largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs

The University of Calgary has roared into the Guinness World Records' roster.
Campus community members shattered the Guinness record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs on Saturday.
"The record was 468. We broke it, so we are record holders with 682 people dressed in dinosaur costumes," said Verity Turpin, vice-provost of student experience at the university, in a phone interview.

The Israeli military is conducting a criminal investigation
after a soldier was photographed striking a Catholic statue
of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon.

Israel’s military officials said they had determined that an
image circulating on social media showing the incident was
authentic. It shows an Israeli soldier using a sledgehammer
striking the head of a statue of the crucified Jesus that had
fallen off a cross.
