Retired? Comics aren't your thing anymore?

Well I'm really big on Marvel comics, especially the classics from 60s and 70s. I have a couple of Spider-Man comics in hardcopy but they're not in the best of conditions. Plus everything is digital these days.

No, I quit collecting and reading around after high school, and it wasn't me "outgrowing" them or whatever, I just remember at the time (late 80s) the quality dropping and the price rising.  I think I can converse coherently on the plot lines and character developments of all the major Marvel heroes from 1975 to 1987 or so.  After that I have no idea if Peter Parker ever graduated college and got married, etc., lol.  Late 70s were a golden age, let me tell you.  The new XMen were huge.  Spiderman had an amazing run.  Fantastic Four, Avengers, great stuff.  I remember being at a Comic convention (a fairly new concept; no cosplay lol) and having a chance to buy about twenty XMen 94s for 25 cents each, but I just didn't have the money!  I knew they were "special" but didn't know they would be what they became.

I haven't kept up with the Marvel movie universe too carefully, but it never surprised me how successful it was going to be- the characters, the Marvel universe- it was a gold mine there waiting all along, and just needed CGI to catch up to it and give it birth.

I have many long boxes of mostly Marvel comics as well though I no longer collect them, either.  My very favorite is Wolverine.  I don’t have his first appearance comic but I do have the original four…bagged and boarded!  It’s the only set I want to keep and pass on to my son. I’m 72, btw, and retired.(Medical Technologist)

You'd be surprised to know that I've read an unhealthy amount of classic Spider-Man comics, even starting from Amazing Fantasy #15. I read them all digitally though, as physical comics aren't really too accessible here lol. The physical copies I have are from issues 67 up till 75? I'll go check again but I think those were the stories that had to do with an ancient tablet stolen by the Kingpin. My little bro mutilated my copy though (kids truancy), and it has been manhandled multiple times.

I read X-Men, Thor and F4 too! As for Doctor Strange, I'll admit I haven't read too many of his main titles. I do know he was the frontrunner or main character in the "Strange Tales" series.

Yeah I enjoy classic rock, although most especially from the progressive subgenre like Genesis (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway), Kansas (Song For America), Uriah Heep, Yes etc. Simon and Garfunkel are fantastic too. Also Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac. Then from the more recent 80s bands, I enjoy Toto a lot.

That being said, my number 1 music genre, right from my teenage years, is hip hop, and I think I've listened to enough hip hop in my lifetime to call myself a full fledged hip hop head  Big Grin

Lol. Peter did get married, and even became CEO of Parker Industries at some point. Sadly Marvel are too focused on the "woe is me" narrative for Peter Parker, so they always craft out a plot that completely sabotages Peter's progess and bring him back to square one. Like the time they made him make a deal with Mephisto (Marvel's devil basically), to bring Aunt May back to life, at the cost of his marriage to MJ and some other stuff.

As for the Marvel movie universe, things aren't really looking good for Marvel on the big screen at the moment, both critically and commercially. If you wish to delve into Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I'll just recommend starting with Iron Man (2008) and ending with Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Everything after the infinity saga has been abysmal so far. And by MCU movies, I'm talking of movies produced by Disney, not those Sony produced marvel movies like Venom, Madame Web etc, even though those are painfully terrible too.

I didn't know you could read old comics online. I have a CD of 40 years of several Marvel comics. I love the origin stories! And those which involve different characters together. One of the best was when there was some quest (back in the 70s) that had different characters teamed up. But that series went across numerous comic books and I couldn't afford all of them (I was desperately poor back then).

While I love the classic rock music of my 20s best, I am actually quite eclectic. True classic (all those old guys), broadway (Camelot, Cats, Tenderloin), instrumental (Ventures and Deodata), electronic (Tangerine Dreams, etc), and even some very weird stuff (like 'What If Beethoven Played Rock Songs'). And I like tribute albums (like when a lot of artists played Elton John music).

I tend to like long songs. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Stairway To Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida). And weird ones. 'They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa', 'Monster Mash', 'Alice's Restaurant'.

Sorry, I don't much like hip-hop, rap, or disco. I'm not an urban scene guy (nor a country/western type). I don't quite understand the social situations of either.

Stairway To Heaven is a classic. It's one of the songs that got me listening to classic rock genres more often.
Although if I'm being completely honest, what really got me into the genre was the GTA game series.  Big Grin

My bros and I used to play GTA San Andreas on the PS2 console back when we were teens, and I remember the game had an awesome soundtrack pulling from different types of music. Songs like "Eminence Front" by The Who, "Barracuda" by Heart etc, really caught my attention and I started searching up these bands online and listening to their albums.

Marvel comics are readily available these days online from any era (Golden Age till present). Check out readcomicsonline.com. There's insane catalogs over there lol.

Thanks for the link. It did work. But those are not what I think of as "comics". I meant newspaper comics. 'Pearls Before Swine', 'Mutts', and 'Frank&Ernest'.

Oh. I see.

Not sure I'm familiar with those, sorry. Thought you were looking for Marvel/DC content.

Although you just made me fondly recall our own Newspaper comics here, which I used to read back then like "Terror Muda", "Kaptain Afrika", "Okadigbo" etc but unfortunately are no longer in vogue. We pretty much don't include comics in our papers anymore.

Sorry to hear your newspapers don't carry comics anymore. I mostly read the newspaper for the editorials and comics these days. Both stimulate my mind. I get my daily news from TV and detailed science/nature stuff from a few magazines. Any "news" from the newspaper is about a day old by the time I read it.

I differentiate between newspaper comics and "comic books". The latter is a poor term (going back to when they were just silly-character humor, like 'Archie' or 'Casper The Friendly Ghost'). Marvel was never humor. It was mostly about teenage/20s angst and the difficulties of power and ethics. And I differentiate between Marvel and DC. I once read that DC was for high-schoolers and Marvel was for college students (and beyond).

Another difference was that DC characters were mostly Superheroes with a fake human identity (Superman/Clark Kent) and Marvel characters were mostly regular humans with a secret Superhero existence (Peter Parker/Spiderman) that messed up their real lives. Peter Parker had real life problems; Clark Kent didn't.
