Joe Rogan Time magazine's 'Person of the Year' 2024? Seriously?
Time magazine's shortlist for their annual 'Person of the Year'
honour features royalty, political power players and podcasting
chart-toppers.
Unbelievably, irresponsible conspiracy theorist and all-round
mental defective Joe Rogan is on Time's shortlist this year.
I kid you not—although after naming Trump as their person of
the year in 2016, I'm guessing Time has probably lost the plot.
When Donald Trump was on the campaign trail, he carved out
time to spend 3 hours on Joe Rogan's absurd podcast.
This month, The Joe Rogan Experience—which averages 11 million
listeners per episode—was named Spotify's top podcast for the fifth
year in a row. (Spotify as a legitimate data source? Seriously? LOL.)
The podcast, which covers current events, comedy and politics, has
a large fan base of immature young men. "Rogan is a polarising figure,
having faced backlash for spreading COVID misinformation on his
show and using racial slurs in the past," Time wrote. Also, who could
forget his ludicrous claims that 9/11 was an inside job.
And—needless to say—Rogan and Alex Jones are in bed together.
Say no more.

Person of the Year is a nod to the person's influence, not quality of character. Rogan may have played a big part in motivating young males to turn out the vote for Trump.

It's the right choice. He represents which way the wind is blowing, for good or bad, which is a bitch-slap to a traditional media that has lost its credibility, its way, and its integrity. He is at the forefront of a new and unregulated way for people to get their information, it is revolutionary and deserving of attention. People are hungry for long-form unscripted open-ended information, the exact kind of thing regular media won't do or can't do. It was influential in the election. People willing to sit down and "shoot the shit" for three hours are simply seen differently from someone who can't, or won't. Democratic autopsies are now complaining three months were too short a time for the electorate to "get to know" Harris. It was a self-inflicted problem. She really should have taken the time to do Rogan (or anything besides fluff stuff).
I don't listen regularly because it's just too damn long, and you have to endure Rogan himself pontificating on things that are of interest to him but not me, but I like the way he interviews (he has long-winded interests in MMA fighting, comedy, pharmaceuticals). He is humble and is very up-front about his own status as an expert: He isn't, and shame on you if you take anything he says as the word of God. That's the way it should be, as opposed to the very popular and dangerous desire by many to have censorship and "misinformation banning." Like all things, there is a trade-off. Ignorant people will still take the word of their heroes as Truth even when dead wrong, but that's an acceptable risk in a free society.

Yes, it's unscripted, with no fact-checking and no real sources. Yeah, that's where we should get our info.

I like the old college bull sessions as much as anyone else, but I also learned that some folks were worth paying attention to, and others not so much. I file Rogan in the latter category.

Revolutionary? No It's thousands of years old, it's called lies and the bastard knows he's lying.

All that means is that Time should have a Scumbag of the Year Award.

No, the internet in general and podcasts in specific are a communications revolution and we are now grappling with what this all means and what the consequences will be.

Joe's rise to fame and notoriety (at least for me) was thru Fear Factor. Donald Trump was thru The Apprentice, I knew little about him prior except for the central park five ad.
The US appears be giving to much credibility to media personalities. Reminds me of Videodrome.

I read that many young kids want to be influencers. Screw productive careers, let's be a brain leech.

Anyone that has a podcast that usually has a theme of some kind and attracts viewers in large enough numbers to make a living on the advertising that the podcast drives. Themes can be political, beauty products, history, knife collecting…and on and on. If they get a high enough viewer count, they make money and are now classified as an influencer. Thank you YouTube!

Yep.
I do need to point out that they have to have a podcast with a very large number of followers to be “legitimately “ called an influencer. Many can try to claim the title but only some actually are.
