Atheist topics
Can we start a thread that discusses atheist topics instead of another christian posting why we should believe their bible? Every time I come on this forum it’s yet another christian apologist looking for converts.

Topic Ideas

Evidence for Evolution
Separation of church and state
Atheism in popular culture
Experiences of discrimination as an atheist
How to tell people ( politely) you are an atheist
Why atheism is a logical conclusion

Any other thoughts?

Your belly button is home to many types of bacteria, fungi, and other germs. Combine that with dead skin cells and the natural oils from your skin, and you've got the recipe for an unpleasant odor. Could also be lint. /s

I mean, we've probably covered a lot of that already. This is, after all, an atheist discussion board. It has a lot of atheist discussions on it. It's even cleverly called "Atheist Discussions". Lots of atheists. Lots of discussions.

So, uhhh....what are you eating right now?
Is this sig thing on?

Evidence for Evolution: Darwin and Wallace's ideas about origin of species is one of the greatest non-mathematical ideas ever conceived. I say "non-mathematical" only because it isn't like an equation. It is a concept, and certainly the most brilliant of modern times.

Separation of Church and State: Before there was either Church or State, there were ancient people trying to understand the difficulties of natural events. All they could do was observe and wonder. Sometime, some damned idiot conceived of a "deity". At some point, superstition was organized with rules to please the deity. Eventually, some grifters specialized in telling other people how to live their lives in support of that.

They said "the crops won't grow unless you worship the sun-guy. Or the crop-woman. Or that terrible one who controlled you after you died. Eventually civilization occurred. Organized large groups of people in one place who had learned to live together in relative peace. But the grifters didn't quit. They convinced some people (in hard times) that their future depended on the Deity. And, in fear, they believed them.

But a large group of people living together need a organized secular group too. So there was also "government". To keep track of the crops, who put in grain and who took out grain. How the people shared the food, etc.

Thus Church and State... Different purposes. And eventually, conflict arose between the two. And it continues to this day, though it seems that secular governance is slowly winning the fight.

Atheism in popular culture: Atheism is slowly winning in popular culture. The more science discovers, the fewer people tend to be superstitious. They do see facts.

Atheism in popular culture: When I was younger (and atheist), atheism was considered something between communist and satanism. That is no longer the case. I feel free to mention my atheism on general forums without much concern.

How to tell people ( politely) you are an atheist: I don't push it on general forums, but if the subject comes up, I mention it. I don't get a lot of pushback these days.

Why atheism is a logical conclusion: That is more of a discussion/argument. I say there is no actual evidence of any sort of deity but that is not proof there isn't. Theists tend to think that if their particular religious text says there is, that their faith is some sort of proof. I do laugh at that circular reasoning.

Itchy insect bits.

I used to dab on some anti-histamine cream but I now prefer to use a hot spoon.

Boil some water in a kettle.
Pour it over the back of a table spoon.

When it cools down enough, press it to the bite as long and as hot as you can bear it.

It really helps stop the itching.

Evidence for evolution - there are entire scientific fields that provide the evidence for evolution. If people are science deniers then that's their problem. Science doesn't give a fuck. This is not a forum about science so why discuss it unless its something newsworthy or of interest to a poster? Besides there's already a forum available.

Separation of church and state - weirdly it seems that in many countries (much of Europe) where there the separation of church and state is not defined clearly, religion is unimportant. The corollary is that in certain countries like the USA where church and state are more clearly separate, religiosity is more important to a larger percentage of the population. It seems to be a cultural issue more than a constitutional one.

Atheism in popular culture - not so much atheism but as naturalistic explanations for our universe and everything in it are demonstrated in everything from popular science and natural history in mass media to drama and other genres, then room for the religious explanation becomes smaller and smaller. The increase in the non-religious is testament to that (no pun intended).

Experiences of discrimination as an atheist - not really an issue for me in the UK. It continues to piss me off that Anglican bishops are represented in the House of Lords and that an Act of Collective Worship is compulsory in schools - even if there is widespread non-compliance. My daughter could not have a legally binding humanist wedding ceremony because she lives in England. If she lived in Scotland or Northern Ireland she could have done. As a Scot and a humanist that pisses me off. Otherwise, in my part of the world no one gives a fuck about your beliefs or lack of them as long as you keep them to yourself.

How to tell people you're an atheist? Nobody's business but mine, but if they do ask I just tell them. In my experience its a non issue for whoever you're telling. See above.

Why atheism is a logical conclusion. It's only a conclusion if you are a gnostic atheist. I'd be very surprised if you ever come across one of those - but I stand to be corrected.

You know to much about my belly button. Where did you hide the camera in my bathroom and does it have smell-o-vision?

To be honest I assume everyone else is also an atheist unless I have reason to suspect otherwise.

For very minor problems, aloe is enough.  Medium itching, calamine lotion.  Serious itching, hydrocortisol...  Hot spoon, no way!  LOL!

It's not really a massive issue in the UK (as you know) people generally leave you alone to get on with your life
You might come across the odd idiot that quotes the bible or who think's that granny is watching over them but on the whole it doesn't really come up in every day conversation.

That would be a bad assumption in most of the US.

However we do have a general principle here that one does not discuss politics or religion in polite company. It is only on social media and in certain areas dominated by, shall we say, "impolite society" where that breaks down. Mostly it doesn't come up. I've only been asked twice in the roughly 30 years I've been an unbeliever, if I'm an atheist. Both times it was a fundamentalist who asked, and I gave them no particular reason to ask, other than not engaging in god-talk.

We married for the bridal gifts.  My mother had been buying gifts for all our friends and family and it was payback time.

Also for the taxes… we debated not getting married for 6 months before we decided Why Not?

I say nonbeliever. They seem to be less threatened when I don't use atheist. When I say atheist all they hear is anti-theist.

I think it's a reaction to the 'New Atheists' in your face stuff from a ways back.

Was this a quote or your statement?

Wasn’t Hitler an Aryan Christian?  Something about Jesus was white and hated Jews? I’m sure he disliked Catholics and envied their power and organizing skills but, he also found them useful and easily manipulated.  It’s something I always thought the Russians should have mimicked…instead of abolishing the church, Russia should have co opted it and manipulated the priests.
