50 Cent - the best illustration of the crappiness of Christianity??
A large crucifix swinging round his neck, with a broad smile on his face and not a hint of regret. "Please Lord forgive me, for I have sinned, over and over again, just to stay on top." He thinks he's going to heaven despite his massively damaging actions, heck, the bible says you just need to ask forgiveness, so why not inspire others to the murderous gangster lifestyle by glorifying it, over and over again? Just say "sorry" afterwards and you're good! I like the backing track BTW, nice tune.

That kind of attitude is obnoxious, yes.  But I can think of better illustrations of the crappiness of Christianity.

I am not one who thinks that the average pew-warmer sees god's grace as a license to do whatever. That is not what I observed. We were also taught that good works evidenced salvation, and if they were not seen, then the legitimacy of repentance was questionable. You were supposed to "go and sin no more".

Where the rub actually was, was what constituted these good works, and toward whom. In authoritarian Christianity, in practice, charity was generally practiced only to fellow Christians who adequately tow the party line, not The Enemy. The problem was in-group selectivity and general hypocrisy and arrogance.

It's not surprising. There's a hell of a lot of Christians who are twats while believing that at the end of the day they will still be forgiven.

@mordant is right, most laypeople aren't this shitty, but let's face it, enough are that they can rake in millions selling this bullshit and still count on forgiveness not only from their fictional god, but also from many millions who would do the exact same thing if only they had the chance.

Oh yes...

Vance converted to Catholicism in August 2019, when
he was baptised and confirmed at St. Gertrude Priory in
Cincinnati, by a Dominican friar. According to an interview
with Christian US writer Rod Dreher, who was present at
the baptism, Vance chose St. Augustine as his patron saint.
Vance is tied to "Catholic integralism", an ideology that seeks
Christian influence over society—which is, at the least, scary.

Vance also thinks Christianity is an "answer" to existential
questions about American identity—whatever that means?

His statements about abortion and immigration may trigger
blowback from some Catholics. Last month, Vance told NBC’s
Meet the Press that he supported the abortion drug mifepristone
"being accessible". And in a campaign fundraising message last
month, he called for mass deportations of immigrants without
legal status.

Trump deserves a nutcase like Vance. Serves him right. I've heard in many political analyst discussions that Trump is sufferring a severe case of "buyers remorse" about choosing Vance. But Trump is not famous for choosing his sychphants well, so no big surprise there. The surprise is that he seems to know it in the present.

Jesus loves the drunkards, and whores, and the queers. A self professed gangster would be a perfect example of christian salvation. That is the offer, after all - makes you wonder things.

Mark Twain said it best, years ago - with sympathy for the devil. The (allegedly) worst of us need salvation the most.

Quote:But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it [first and] most?

But they can see his mental state is rapidly declining. By inauguration day he’ll be blowing spit bubbles. He has to go. Vance is the poisoned chalice thrown in there to fuck with his head.

I dare say Boulos has the most to gain:

There's a trad Catholic on another forum who literally wants to bring back the Inquisition and thinks that the best form of government is a Catholic monarchy. He's always fucking with people over there who think that unaccountable authoritarian rulers are some kind of problem. Predictably he also doesn't think slavery is inherently bad, etc.

So yes this stuff is every bit as scary as Christian Nationalism from the fundamentalists, if not more so at least in concept.

I didn't hear/read/know the "Biden bathing suit" thing, but it sure does sound like Trump. He says the weirdest things often (and loudly)! Thank you for quoting "someone" about that. Pre-Trump, I would have guessed that was an Onion article, but reality often exceeds sarcasm.

Thank you for the "poisoned chalice" reference. I had to look that one up. My initial guess was a Sherlock Holmes title, but I found it was Shakespeare. That's something I love about this place. I learn something new every day!

50 Cent and others like him are not "mainstream pop culture" to me. Most of them seem about as smart as dead chipmunks, are misogynist, and support and live a lifestyle of absent fathers and "look at me wrong and I'll pop you". Their political opinions are about as meaningful as that of my cats.

Just my personal opinion, of course...

No offence Cavebear, but you're pretty old, I mean, I'm 43 so maybe I'm out of touch too and Kendrick Lamar and Drake pull more views than 50 Cent these days. Still, some obscure long dead monk? Defo not pop culture.

I understand. My grandparents didn't like "rock&roll". But they did like some of my music (Simon&Garfunkle, Carley Simon, etc) and respected that they had social concerns and values.

I also understand that the music anyone loves depends on what they are familiar with "growing up" and from people they can admire. Familiarity does matter. But I see little value in thug life and anger.

It's glamorous and hard looking, with "fuck the system!" punk vibes built in. It probably also snares much young fine looking ignorant women by that token. No wonder carcinogenic 50 Cent style rap is popular.

Amongst regular Americans, I figure that Trump's supporters are honest, earnest, racist, and simple-minded to put it kindly (though to be honest they're probably lying to themselves, unwittingly). But amongst his big-name supporters with prime-time shows, and big-bucks financiers, I reckon that they're banking on a dotard who will wind up in Woodrow Wilsonville and vulnerable to manipulation -- if he's not already there.

He's got so many hands up his ass he's made fisting a team sport ... and he's so off-point he doesn't realize it. And yes, Vance is in on it. He's hoping that the Shitgibbon croaks in office, allowing some nobody from Shitsplat, Ohio to go to the front of the line ... only to be controlled just the same.

This piece of mindless, lyrical trash is allegedly one of his
best(?) tracks, with more than 2.1b downloads. Believe it or not.
I know it's an oldie, but that only shows that a new generation
of American kids are just as lacking as their predecessors when
it comes to musical tastes.

The guy can't sing, for starters, and if you're able to discern the
so-called words he mouths, you'll find that English must be his
second language LOL.

His last so-called hit was in 2014 when "Smoke" struggled to #154
on the UK charts.  Other than that single, 50 cent has not charted
for a decade, so I'd hardly call him "mainstream" pop culture.

I'd bet dollars against your doughnuts that not all those downloads went to American computers.

Not sure what you think American musical taste amounts to, but broad swipes like this don't do you any favors. I'm one of those predecessors you're criticizing. What about my musical taste offends you? Be specific.

But hey, at least you got to feel superior for a moment.
