Trouble at t' mill


I was so hoping to see this thing break even before my own collection of particles went their separate ways but not now. Another 10 years has been clagged on and I would be 81. No chance!
And that ten year delay is just to power up the thing and play about with the magnets, there will be another 5 years before they light up the plasma.

Ok, who didn't expect cost hikes and delays on a project this size, but then construction began in 2010 and 30 years later we might be lucky to see something happen, if we're lucky.

Most, if not all of the problems are down to bad management and poor quality control. Engineers found cracks in some of the already installed parts of the vessel. Unfortunately these were indicative of a deeper problem which was that some of the components which are produced by different companies didn't align. This created stress in parts where there shouldn't be stress causing helium mix corrosion. This means taking some already installed elements apart and reordering them, an engineers nightmare.

As always an excellent presentation from Sabine, only 5 minutes when you skip the last few minutes of the usual sponsorship blah blah.

IF we are lucky and fusion becomes a safe trustable energy source in 30 years, that would be a great thing.  I won't be around in 30 years, so it won't help me any, but human progress always sort of continues.  Eventually, technology problems get overcome.  And that's good.  Fire good.  Oil good.  Electricity much better.  Etc...   Big Grin

We will have safe fusion "someday".  Some future generation will laugh at magnetic fields and torus designs (or maybe not) and wonder why the solution wasn't obvious to the current "us".  Probably something like "far side of the moon and energy transfer beams" but if I knew how that could work, I wouldn't be talking to you friends right now.  I'd be to busy doing it.  And someday, someone will be "too busy doing it".
You can't win, you can't break even, and you can't get out of the game!
