Robert G. Ingersoll : “No man with a sense of humor ever founded a religion.”
Haven’t the Irish left the church in droves? I agree that those remaining are either clueless or don’t care…
Considering that Mass is obligatory, it’s still telling! It usually takes a generation to quit calling themselves Catholic. Similar to how many atheist Jews are out there before they just start calling themselves atheists instead of Jewish atheists.

Same topic, different organization - I watched a Netflix documentary on the Boy Scouts and the pervasive sex abuse that was going on. It was really discusting. As someone in the documentary said, "If you were going to create a male pedophile organization in which men could have unrestrained access to little boys then you'd come up with the Boy Scouts." When the Boy Scouts started in the UK back 100 years ago even within the first year they were pedophile problems. I never understood the appeal of the Boy Scouts. It always seemed a little....ewwww, or something. Last I heard 82,000 men have filed a claim against the Boy Scouts but the numbers might go even higher. Men who were molested as children are less apt to admit it happened than women. (10-27-2023, 10:20 PM)Thethingaboutitis Wrote: Hasn't made a great deal of difference in Ireland. A little basic research clearly indicates this is not the case: Quote:Weekly Mass attendance which stood at 91% in 1975 was down to 36% in 2016 according to figures from the last Irish census... And as pattylt pointed out there is the generation time delay. The average age of church going Christians is 67. One more generation and it's all over. * Ousted. No, it's me who should apologize. I don't even know where I was going with that, the only point you were trying to make was there are lot's of daft fuckers out there. Census form Christians: Quote:On Sunday, millions of people will sit down to fill out the 2021 Census. When they do so, they’ll find a seemingly very simple question: “What is your religion? Most will tick the box they think is relevant to them without thinking too much about it. And then, without them knowing, a vast machine will whir into operation, involving the Office for National Statistics, religious organisations, politicians and public services. And it will use that data to prop up an archaic religious power structure in an overwhelmingly secular country.Link My bad.
I'm curious about any of you guys who were in the Boy Scouts. I posted something a few posts back about the Boy Scouts scandal that has pretty much bankrupted the organzation. There are 82,000 men filing for a claim from the Boy Scouts for being molested by scout leaders. It seems that the Boy Scouts administators had files on these perverts but didn't do anything about the problem. They would quietly dismiss these sexual preditors without telling the police or the parents and the perverts would move to another city, become a Boy Scout leader and start preying on little boys all over again.
One guy said he was pretty much part of an international sex ring as a little boy in the New Orleans area. Pedophiles were flying in from various parts of the world to diddle these poor boys and posing as Boy Scout leaders. It was horrific. Most of this seemed to happen with kids who had no father and the mother would send the kid off to the Boy Scouts to have some male guidance that was lacking in the household. The Girl Scouts didn't seem to have this problem. But when I was about 11 years old I joined the Girl Scouts and on the first day the Scout leader led a prayer. I quit the next day. So I got one day of the Girls Scouts and that was it. Even at 11 years old religion turned my stomach. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you guys joined the Boy Scouts and what your experience was like. (10-28-2023, 04:17 PM)Inkubus Wrote:(10-28-2023, 10:58 AM)Thethingaboutitis Wrote: I do apologize. No worries mate.
I never joined the Boy Scouts even though my father died when I was 12. I had no interest and my mother never pushed it. I'm glad I didn't join from what I've heard about the organization.
I was brought up Catholic. Fortunately no priest ever diddled me. Even as a kid I had zero interest in church shit so I just went to mass when my mother made me, and therefore there was little opportunity for a priest to groom me. I stopped going when I was 17. I started going back in my late 30s during a personal crisis, but stopped fooling myself that I believed during the pandemic. It's all pure BS and the Catholic Church is one of the most corrupt organizations ever. And always a step behind on human rights. Jews, homosexuals, democracy, trade unions, and especially women, you name it and the Church was almost certainly against it at some point in its history. A bunch of misogynist hypocrites. And all these gay-bashing cardinals like O'Brien were secretly diddling young seminarians or had secret lovers, and were the best clients for male escorts in Rome. Everyone should read "In the Closet of the Vatican" by Frédéric Martel. It was the book that opened my eyes, and even if only 1/10th of it is true, it would still be a scandal.
I was discussing privately with another member here, on why there are so many pervert priests (and conversely why a general lack of priestly vocations). I concluded:
1) Few people still believe in this shit; 2) You no longer need to be a priest or religious to hide the fact that you're gay; 3) Married men need not apply; 4) Half the population is excluded due to the church's misogyny. That leaves... the pedophiles! |
