The first Catholic diocese to ever exist in America has filed for bankruptcy in anticipation of a wave of sex abuse lawsuits, The Baltimore Banner reported.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore made the move in the wake of a new state law that was passed in April which opens the church to a flood of legal claims. This Sunday, Maryland’s statute of limitations will lift, allowing claims for alleged crimes that happened years ago. As The Banner points out, bankruptcy effectively halts the litigation.
In an interview with The Banner ahead of the bankruptcy filing, Archbishop William E. Lori said the church is anticipating an onslaught.
“There’s going to be lots of lawsuits, more than our resources can handle,” Lori told The Banner. “Why not come to the table now? Why not get going? Why delay?

Netflix gets a lot of flack these days but about 6 years ago they had a series called, "The Keepers" about the unsolved murder of a nun in the Baltimore area back in the early 1970's.  The students of the nun had always wanted to solve the case and now, in their early and mid 60's, they set out to find the killer.  Well, their investigation led to the revelation of sexual abuse on a large scale plus collusion between the priests and the local Baltimore police department, which had a large number of Catholics among their ranks.   It is an absolutely riveting series.  I think there's about 7 installments in the series. 

I don't like long, drawn out streaming series. This was just the right length and it kept my interest. 

The Baltimore case that is in the courts now is partly because of that Netflix series.   In a news report I saw one of the ladies from the Netflix series who had been repeadedly abused by a priest (now unfortunately dead) standing next to one of the lawyers.

Here's the nun that was murdered, most likely because she knew about the sexual abuse her students were experiencing by the priests.  If you really want to get mad as hell about abusive priests then this is the series to watch.  As I said, it's really riveting.

You wouldn't believe how many people here in the US love the British royal family.   Most of my family are Canadians and they don't give a shit about king chuck and his family and certainly Canada has a little closer relationship with the British royal family that the US  does, but I have friends here in the US who think they are fabulous.   Go figure.

I agree that some Americans are in love with the British Royalty but I’m not sure it’s in the same way as those Britons that love them. When an sub-organization of a religion dissolves itself to avoid legal and financial consequences, it shows that they are no different from any other profit-making enterprise trying to keep their profits. And that is really all they are. A business. A truly honest faith (of any kind) would admit to errors in selecting representatives and deal with the situation by improving their selection standards.

This is such a self-protective situation where the Catholics are protecting their own criminals that it hardly bears saying that they are so utterly and completely bereft of any moral authority.

It is high time for Government to start investigating religious businesses and treat them for what they are. They are vast money-sucking organizations scamming the weak and confused among us. And they should be taxed and treated like any other scam-operating business. With prejudice and intent to stop.

Has there been any reports like this out of Poland? Spain and Poland are supposedly the last “great” Catholic countries. Spain has secularized and it seems Poland may be on the cusp…the youth there certainly are.
