I know incense was used in the temple times but I’m not sure if it ended when the temple was destroyed or some point later.
At Mass with my BFF…age 12? …the first time I heard the bells, I thought Tinkerbell was making an appearance.
Catholic robes astound me still. On the one hand, they are beautiful, on the other, so costly and ostentatious….and they dis drag queens. Hmmph.
Apparently Pope Francis said of Cardinal Burke (the grumpy cat in the last picture) "he is the very thing he despises". He also sidelined him.
If you want a good read about the shit show in Rome, "In the Closet of the Vatican" by Frédéric Martel is a real eye-opener. Apparently Cardinal Grumpy Cat likes to surround himself with handsome young men. He is also one of the most virulent homophobes in the Vatican.

Homophobes tend to often be homosexuals with self loathing. If they left the church, came out of the closet and accept themselves, they’d have a much happier and HEALTHIER life.

I have heard about this self-loathing idea, but I have never quite understood it. Im very happy being who I am.

Catholics would also be much healthier without the guilt trip these assholes impose. Cardinal O’Brien, the prelate of Scotland, was one of the biggest homophobes in the church and tried to guilt Catholics into sexual « purity ». Guess what… turns out he was getting it on with his seminarians. And since the church doesn’t admit women to seminary, you can fill in the blanks. He resigned in shame after leaving permanent scars on the young men he abused.

I think much of the self loathing is due to the centuries where LGBTQ had to be deep into the closet. When your entire culture despises the idea of being gay, it’s a mental construct to bury your feelings and yet, hate what you feel.
Today, this is changing…especially amongst the youth. They know people are gay. They don’t care. While not all of them are like this, in general, they are the most accepting generation we’ve ever had. The coming out of the gay community starting in the 70’s took enormous courage. Suddenly, everyone started to see family and friends that were gay and no longer silent about it. When you’re faced with the cognitive dissonance of gay being wrong yet people you love are gay, it breaks through the mental fog. More and more people realized being gay wasn’t a choice. The stories of gay men and women talking about just how young they were when they realized they were different blew the “choice” out of the water.
The utter failure of conversion therapy was another as those stories emerged. Finally, science started to really look into hypotheses of why a percentage of the population is gay and it’s a steady number. We don’t have those answers yet. It’s not specifically genetic but it’s not environmental either. Answers will come. That when the religious right will finally be defeated with their horrible sexual control on their believers.
The vast majority of self loathing gays are religious and that’s very telling.

This is true. I've learned more about ethics from my children (the oldest is 33) than my former church. From my kids I learned acceptance and non-discrimination. When I was their age, I was nowhere near as accepting as they are. Fortunately I was able to learn it from them before my youngest came out as trans, it made accepting her come naturally. It also triggered the response of leaving my church. I was able to grind through the layer of hypocrisy and see what was really underneath. The pandemic helped a lot as we had no place to go and I'm retired so I had lots of time to read and explore. And lots of time to ride my bike and cogitate all of this.
Religion wants freedom from discrimination so that they may be free... to discriminate.

I went to a Catholic funeral for a dear friend. It was interesting what with all the priests dressed to the hilt like kings. Biggest problem was when they walked up and down the aisle swinging the incense pots. With all my allergies, I nearly choked to death. What was the significance of that? Drumming up more business for the next funeral?
That's always a thing for me.
The Catholic "vestments' are of Roman origin. They are Roman clothing.
Do they really thing that a wandering Jewish preacher (if there was one) would wear this sort of garb. It's a continuing scandal. It used to be worse, with the Pope on a palanquin and throne. WTF has that to do with Jesusism ?

The Catholic Church long ago ceased to be about an impoverished itinerant preacher.
The peons in the pews are supposed to be poor. Or at least will be if they have as many offspring as the church wants.
The hierarchy is another story. I’ve been to Rome and seen the princes prancing. A Canadian cardinal living there has a 9000 sq. ft apartment.
I guess orgies need a lot of room…
