Illinois dioceses tolerated decades of abuse by clergy, report finds

May 23 (Reuters) - Some 2,000 Illinois children were sexually abused by Roman Catholic clergy between the 1950s and 2010s, the state attorney general said in a report released on Tuesday that also detailed how abuse was often tolerated and concealed by Church leaders.

The 696-page report, released by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, substantiated claims of abuse made against 451 Catholic clerics and religious brothers in the state's six dioceses. At least 1,997 children were sexually abused over the past seven decades, the report said.

The church is a crime syndicate.  If only we had a justice department that would crack down on them.

It’s not poor screening. It’s not clericalism. It’s not priestly celibacy.

It’s a distorted and inhuman sexual doctrine that makes being LGBQT a Church crime. Ironically, some 30% of clergy, and 60% of religious orders are gay. But they can’t come out for fear of the repercussions. So a form of « omertà » forms. I won’t out you if you won’t out me. The resultant hypocrisy is astounding. Cardinal O’Brien was one of the most conservative, most vocally anti-gay, gay-bashing clerics. Turns out he was screwing his seminarians.

The more gay-bashing the cleric, the more likely he’s gay himself, thanks to the shame and guilt piled onto gays by the Church. And the more devoted a cleric is to the Virgin Mary, the more likely he is a misogynist. As an ex Catholic female friend said, if you’re not pure like the Virgin Mary, you’re a whore in their eyes.

From this distorted view of sexuality flows all the Church’s perversions. When everything’s a sin, nothings’s a sin.

LGBTQ has nothing to do with child abuse. A gay man isn't a pedophile and we're talking pedophiles here.

You’re quite right.  The issue is that since being homosexual is seen as a perversion by the Church, a culture of silence is created in the Church where gay men fear outing the pedophiles for fear of being outed themselves.  In the Church, everyone is supposed to be like the Virgin Mary.  Since we must procreate to survive, the Church allows a small opening to sex: married couples.

Of course this is a totally erroneous view of human sexuality.  It’s a façade and completely unrealistic. Throw into the mix clericalism where priests were long seen as untouchable by the rest of us, and you have a potent and corrupt mix where clerics protect each other and are huge hypocrites.  Gay priests live in constant fear of being outed, losing their job, and losing their housing.

Until the Church finally realizes that sex is normal, and for gays gay sex is normal, and allows clergy straight or gay to form normal sexual relationships including marriage, this shit will continue to happen.

Edit to add: gay priests in the priesthood are no more likely to offend than heterosexual priests. I want to make that clear. The issue is not only that offences are committed, but that they're covered up. When so many other priests are living under a reign of terror of being outed for their sexuality which is seen as a big taboo by the Church, it creates a culture of silence, of threat of blackmail and of passing the buck. Imagine a gay bishop (and there are many), who has to deal with a pedophile priest under his authority who happens to know the bishop is gay. The same could be said of course, of heterosexual priests who have lovers, or abuse adult women (also prevalent). Moreover sexual abuse in the Church is not limited to children. Women, even nuns, have been prey for priests. The case of Jean Vanier is mind-boggling (google it...). So too have been adult men (often seminarians). Cardinals McCarrick and O'Brien were preying on young men in their seminaries.

It's just one big fuck-up caused by an unrealistic notion that clergy will live up to some kind of ideal of "purity" exemplified by the Virgin (fictional) Mary. Jean Vanier's mentor even got his rocks off in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Like I said if you make everything a sin, then nothing becomes a sin. It's like trying to put a 35 mph speed limit on a 6-lane expressway...
