Haven't been keeping up with it very closely at all but apparently congressional hearings are going on to consider banning TikTok? Any opinions? My understanding is the Chinese control of it and gobbling up of American public info is the main fear, we're being "spied" on? Seriously? I mean, don't we already just give out all our info to pretty much anybody who asks as part of current on-line culture? Is it possible this is really just maneuvering by TikTok social media competitors who would get a bigger slice of American screen time? China itself already bans their own damn TikTok thing, so what, we should too? Or not? Is TikTok turning our children's brains into mashed potatoes? But then, this is America, don't we have the First Amendment right to consume whatever media we want? Who the fuck is the government to tell me I can't sit on my couch and watch Pornhub TikTok for seven straight hours? I voted for them? I mean really, WTF?

Tik Tok or Not Tok?

I feel the same way about FB. No single company should have a lock on what gets put in front of the product.

Tik Tok or Not Tok?
Seems like fearmongering to me, another dumb moral panic that's not a solution to anything. Also oddly convenient given the tensions with China. And I don't see how it's much different than banning books.
“For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.” -Carl Sagan.
I have never been to tiktok, nor do I have any kids in my life. I have no opinion.
TikTok is just as problematic as American owned social media spyware. The US government is more concerned about it because their data supports China's government instead of our own. I'm not in support of banning any websites, as it starts to look like China's great firewall. That said, I'd strongly support a ban on TikTok useage on any government issued devices or networks. I haven't taken the time to read the bill myself, but based on Louis Rossmann's reading of the bill, it goes a lot further than "Ban TikTok". It looks like a seriously problematic bill on the level of the PATRIOT Act.
I do not use it, therefore, it should not be used by anyone!
The Ban-Fucking-Everything crowd will learn in short order that this shit proliferates far faster than their ability to work up faux outrage. Ban TikTok and the next day there will be a new app called "Dik-Dok" or something and then they can begin their hysteria all over again.

I neither Tik nor Tok, so talk my opinion with a grain of salt, but we should all be pretty concerned when the government assumes the power to instruct us what media we cannot consume.
On hiatus.

Plus it's not even a media per say as a publishing platform like Youtube for example. While they do have guidelines and rules as to what kind of content can be published, they, like any other large size platform struggle to enforce them fairly and effectively and much like Youtube, over 90% of the content is completely harmless stuff. Sure there are a few very popular maniacs for a wide range of issues like rabid misogynists passing by conspiracy theorists passing by western born vatniks, but most of the stuff is just goof and that's very fine. Seems like American hypocrisy. "You can consume our terrible brain rot memes and videos and have your data taken by American social media sites but not Chinese ones." That it is any kind of a security risk seems like a fig leaf; if the ChiCom govt is using TikTok to "spy" on American politicians and journalists (an alleged concern mentioned in the videos above) then the best answer seems to be the individuals doing less TicToking or TicToking more carefully. Not censorship.
Economically...? Protectionism is a theme that rises and falls in popularity in American politics, in both parties. I personally would like to see more shit actually built here so we have some kind of manufacturing base, so maybe there are some parallels. Except what is being contemplated here is outright ban, rather than a protective tariff that discourages the foreign product. Final answer: TikTokTax? Tik Tok or Not Tok?
TikTok should be banned. Not because of spyware concerns, but honestly because TikTok is rotting everyone's goddamn brains. It's rewiring the neural reward pathways of an entire generation in real time. It's horrible. Don't get me wrong, all social media is bad for your brain, but TikTok, Instagram Reels... any short-video-based algorithm that's out there now... they are the worst, hands down.

At which point, we could say that the brain rot everyone worries about on tik tok is made in america. It's important to remember that the us (and big tech) don't want to stop collecting data, they would simply prefer that tik tok report that data to them instead of the chinese government. Heartwarming to see a truly bipartisan issue, eh? (04-05-2023, 04:13 PM)Rhythmcs Wrote:(04-05-2023, 03:45 PM)jerry mcmasters Wrote: Seems like American hypocrisy.
