I think a better question is this: Why does anyone think that trying to browbeat other people adds to any discussion?

And as I mentioned, I had stopped posting for other reasons and wanted to do so again for the same reasons.  I should have made that clear in post #137.

However, I keep reading other posts and being drawn back in.  Perhaps it's a peculiar failing of mine to try to avoid playing by ear, as so robbing my moment-to-moment awareness of its essential function.  

I guess we all have ways we try to over-simplify.

Yep. I know instinctively when to withdraw from a discussion. I just know when it's going to spiral downhill. Maybe I trust such "instincts' more.

Such a remarkably intelligent person can learn to avoid verbally abusing others.  I put up with enough of such behavior myself in our discussions on emergent materialism, of all things.
