Yes, and some of them get tired of waiting.

When any excuse to shoot becomes routine, it harbors ill for us all. On the other hand, discouraging door-to-door salesmen and theist nuts might be a good thing.

The predictable consequence of a long running industry wide advertising campaign. Manufacturers needed to come up with ways to sell more guns to people who already had Moar Guns.

It used to be that guns were advertised for their hunting specs, for their durability and craftsmanship. Now it's all about how they have the stopping power to bring a mexican rapist down in a single shot...and how you should probably buy a hot pink glock for your daughter, too. Brilliant.

Personally, I always mention that these loons who -say- they're considering starting a firefight in their own home -to protect the kids- have both never thought that through, and are lying through their teeth. They're arming up for rahowa. They're not actually dreaming of defending themselves, their kids, or anything like that. They're dreaming of gunning down their unarmed political opponents, and any cover will do. When they're with friends at home..or political rallies in public, they don't mind saying that quiet part out loud. It's been voiced all the way up to the office of the us presidency. We're willing to let them get away with it when their fantasies can no longer be contained and spill out into reality, too. On the odd chance we aren't..... we immediately call them sick lone wolves. Just packs and packs of sick lone wolves.

The us doesn't have a gun problem. We have a terrorist problem.

Or singing to each other.

I was traveling last week and ended up in a decidedly mediocre place with a truck stop vibe. I was the first patron of the day at 6am and the first C&W song piped in had lyrics to this effect:

Well it's true you won that war back in 1865,
But you Northerners better bring it because pretty soon we're going to whup your ass.

It probably rhymed somehow, but that's the gist.

This is the mood of southerners, Christian fundamentalists, and southern Christian fundamantalists. And they sound armed to the teeth with guns, or at least very ugly sentiments. Also apparently the notion that the antebellum South should be wistfully bemoaned as a tragic loss, a romantic bygone time, still somehow lives on.

That's actually terrifying.

We just drove the entire country from Oregon to Maine, and we did stop at a diner somewhere in like, Iowa? There was so much hatred on the few locals in there, It rolled off in waves. And yeah, similar music on the radio, and they were outright talking, with total strangers in the diner, about personally assassinating political rivals. We were in there less than 2 minutes, and it felt like walking into a war zone. And it's not like I pulled up in a Tesla covered in Pride flags. Just a Penske moving truck, jeans and a comfy sweater for driving in. Middle aged tiny lady, that's me, but apparently these people hated me on sight. The waitresses just ignored us for a while. We left and got the only fast food on the trip.

Maine had a shooting not too long ago, pretty soon after we arrived. There's no escaping it. It's simmering pot of violence, that's for sure.

Bumping up this thread - which thanks to SCOTUS will become more and more useful - for today's latest atrocity.

Back in the 70s, it seemed gangs were killing each other. And that didn't affect me much. Then maybe in the 90s it seemed like there were honor-killing murders or entryways for joining a gang. Which also didn't affect me much. If the crazies wanted ti kill each other, "fine". I can feel immune from certain criminal parts of society. I had other social mountains to climb.

Now though, it seems that there is so much high-powered fire that no one is safe even in their homes. It has gone from personal tragedies to a serious social issue. Something has to be done about that.

At this point, it is way past time to get a renewed understanding of the 2nd Amendment. But maybe that needs a separate thread...

I agree with you but the NRA's answer is always "more guns."

A country full of guns that has mass shootings.
Who'd of thought it?

I can't understand why there's any surprise anymore. The headlines always say "A community in shock" or "We never thought that it would happen here".

Why? Every man and his dog has a gun.

I think that the horse has left the barn at the number of guns in circulation so we need to get more creative around the gun issue. A few ideas I’ve heard circulating are…

Mandatory insurance required for owning guns. Higher sentences for firing a gun without it…including hunting and target shooting. We mandate insurance on cars.

Limits on purchases of bullets and additional taxes on them. Same with adding like bump stocks, clips, etc.

Better buy back programs to reduce the numbers including incentives to encourage it.

Stronger restrictions on carry concealed and stronger background checks, including bullets, clips, bump stocks, etc.

They all have problems and will be hard to enact and enforce but the majority of Americans are in favor of added restrictions surrounding guns. Voting in Democrats is a good start.

As of 30 November 2024, a total of 648 people have been killed
and 2,227 people have been wounded in 547 mass shootings.

All thanks to the 2nd Amendment and the NRA.  Well done America.

Has anyone else here had to talk with their child about "what to do if you're caught in a mass-shooter event"?

That shit will clear your head.

Yes, my grandkids.  Two are out of HS and one still in.  They do a yearly training.

I hear that there is a document circulating online supposedly written by the shooter. I can't find it.

The following was taken from a CNN coverage, the quoted speaker is a school representative.

“We also have a very strong faith in our community that in spite of tragedy, God is working. And we believe that God is good in everything and that he turns beauty for ashes. And so I had a number of families who mentioned that to me, that this wasn’t a surprise to God, and that he’s going to do something mighty with it,” she continued.

“We’re holding on to those words, and we’re continuing to believe and trust in him. He is our foundation at Abundant Life Christian school,” she added. “We have complete faith that he will carry us through this.”

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/abundan...index.html

Talk about brain washed.

Another thought, christian schools where I live are a dumping ground for the incorrigible kids removed from public schools, lot's of bullying which goes unreported and kept hidden. Guess I'll have to stay tuned.

Idiots.
I guess you can't expect them to say "god did fuckall."  At least that would be the truth.

Another one. Almost "just" another one". It is becoming too sadly routine. I've gotten to the point where I dread to hear of one just because it dominates the political news for a week when I want to hear about actual national and international news that has more importance.

I don't mean that the shootings aren't tragic. But they are only tragic to some few people. So when I consider the war in Ukraine, fighting in Gaza, Chinese hackers, international trade fights developing, Trump as President, scammers stealing billions, etc, the new "too routine" event capturing the news 20 hours of 24 just seems a false equivalence.

The solution to some problems seems so obvious. Get rid of the guns.
