what's your tribe?
#26

what's your tribe?
In order of importance to me:

Gossett family member
Musician
Freethinker
Veteran
Disabled person

I try, however, to keep this verse in mind:

Donne Wrote:No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

The lesson I get from this verse is that I should always work to expand my tribe.
Freedom isn't free.

I'll commit to freethinker.
Consider
Although, the word itself seems almost anti-tribal or at least, non-tribal.
I mean, isn't it a disqualification or, at least an oxymoron, for a freethinker to seek the company of those of a like mind?
Cat herding, anyone? Dunno

Well, I've never been a joiner.
To quote Groucho ~ I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member.

Tribalism as a thing ... not my thing. Dodgy

It is the conundrum, but the pleasure I feel when I meet a fellow freethinker signifies to me that that's an important self-identifier for myself.

Now, whether they welcome me into the club or not ... that's pure conjecture at this point. Big Grin

I'm not much of a joiner or even social person, but I do relate better to people I have something in common with, and fellow freethinkers do make me feel right at home.

(07-16-2021, 12:13 AM)jerry mcmasters Wrote: Pretty much as established an objective fact about human nature as any is that an individual seeks and develops tribal relationships.  So, how big or small, in your mind, is your tribe?  With what groups, if any, do you identify?  I think we can all rule out "Family and close friends" first as our tribe, you get a call in the middle of the night needing your help, you help without asking too many questions because it's the most nuclear unit.  (I shouldn't need to explain exceptions, of course this dad or that sister who is a demonstrated cunt/psychopath/neglect etc isn't in the tribe).

Unfortunately, I read that as tribadism, and had to ask a mate what it meant.    Whistling
