It is the conundrum, but the pleasure I feel when I meet a fellow freethinker signifies to me that that's an important self-identifier for myself.

Pretty much as established an objective fact about human nature as any is that an individual seeks and develops tribal relationships.  So, how big or small, in your mind, is your tribe?  With what groups, if any, do you identify?  I think we can all rule out "Family and close friends" first as our tribe, you get a call in the middle of the night needing your help, you help without asking too many questions because it's the most nuclear unit.  (I shouldn't need to explain exceptions, of course this dad or that sister who is a demonstrated cunt/psychopath/neglect etc isn't in the tribe).

my tribe was born of practicality. We did not pay others to fix our things, we took them apart, ruined a few and fixed more.
That was the farmer mantra, fix it, make do, adapt.
It has taken decades to un-learn much of it, to delegate.

I believe it was three generations for me.  My mother still had relatives who were farmers when she grew up.  She learned to make dresses, quilts, pickles, jams, and applesauce from her mother, so those skills hadn't died out yet.

I heard that my grandfather was a bit of an arse. That info came from my mother so is probably unreliable.
He might have been a farmer, who knows.
