Aspern, Napoleons first major defeat, brought to him by Austria. Next to general Saint-Hilaire he lost his dear personal friend and one of his best marshals: Jean Lannes

Lannes was hit by a spent cannonball rolling along the ground which hit him in the ankle, smashed the bone, resulting in amputation, and died from the infection.  Ah, 18th century medicine at its finest!

George Washington died in 1799.... the assholes bled him for a sore throat!

Not much improved in the intervening 10 years.
