The scenery was stunning, the story was adequate, but yes, it wasn't as seminal as advertised.
Probably needed more bareback and less brokeback.

‘Gladiator’. I’m still amazed that Crowe could do this trite POS, then go on to do the great and much underrated ‘Cinderella Man’.
The latter film also destroyed what little faith I had in the Oscars - how in the everlasting fuck do you NOT give Paul Giamatti an Academy Award for that? Boru
My lead prof at Purdue (History) asked me what I thought of that movie. I went on for five minutes, until I had to take a breath, about the first ten(?) minutes of the movie.
"But what about the Roman politics?" "I just watched the first ten minutes." (04-12-2022, 03:51 AM)Fake Messiah Wrote: Porn movies. Acting is terrible, dialogues are atrocious, plots are derivative (people trying to fix things but always fail or we don't see if they made it) and most don't even have plots. I mean, what do people see in them? Um... I wouldn't know anything about porn movies... well, only what a friend told me. I'm a creationist; I believe that man created God.

The fucking Ten Commandments movie. Every year around Easter it's on TV. I just clicked past it the other day and I happened onto the dumb scene with Charlton Heston and Anne Baxter and this dialogue that could have been written by a high school drop out.....

Cast Away. Not that the movie is overrated but I question why does it exist at all? Tom Hanks is on the island, alone, discovering how to light up a fire without the matches, how to break a coconut, and then he builds a raft and escapes - mmm, ok, I think that the world could have gone fine without that one. Seems like Tom Hanks (talent) was wasted on this movie.
Or another Zemeckis movie: Flight. The whole movie is about how if you snort enough cocaine you can cheat on a drunk test - or something like that. Seems pointless. Probably not everyone's taste, though.

Hanks' character came back from the island feeling isolated from everyone, but where were all the publishers offering him book deals for his story? (04-16-2022, 06:51 PM)abaris Wrote: .... It's mostly a one man show and that's where an actor can really shine ... Much more brilliantly conceived and acted is Redford's "All Is Lost", an approximately similar story of one man against the odds. The dramatic difference that put Redford's movie orders of magnitude better than Hanks' was "All Is Lost" portrayed a man continuously confronted by defeats that were the product of his own deficiencies, so he was, in essence, trying to prevail against himself. But this thread is overrated flicks, and I agree, "Castaway" is overrated.
Castaway is good but I think it's fair to say it's overrated. For most people it's the most famous film in the subgenre of movies where you watch one actor in a single setting (for most of the movie at least), but it's far from the best.
