I may be the last person in the known Universe still using a Nokia phone.
On hiatus.
My current phone is smaller than my first one in the mid 90ies, but it's considerably larger than what I used in the mid 2000s.
My first mobile phone was what I called "the shoe phone". It had its own briefcase.
The older generations use them now, and I speak from experience that old eyes and fingers don't match well with tiny phones.
Back in the day most users were young. My guess is that eventually you will have both tiny and large phones to serve all the age groups. More sales.

For women huge phones are a problem because clothing companies don't put pockets in blue jeans anymore. They have fake pockets. It LOOKS like a pocket but it isn't. Or sometimes the pocket is maybe 2 inches deep. I made some blue jeans for one of my daughters and her big request was to have a back pocket that was large enough for her big phone so I measured her phone and scaled the pocket to fit her phone. She was very happy.

One of my friends at work had a mobile phone during the 1990's. It had to be carried in a back pack and had very limited range. He also had to pay around 50¢ per minute for each call. I don't know what the sizes or shapes of most mobile phones are now because I've never owned one.

Possibly one of the best phones I've owned, but its battery's dead... bugger. A tactile physical keypad, joystick keys, and smaller and more pocket friendly than my current Samsung S with its unnecessarily oversized screen. And Samsung are now selling a ridiculous 6.7" screen (17cm). Try fitting that in your pocket! I'm a creationist; I believe that man created God.

I still have one like this around here somewhere - from the late nineties.
Mine is white though, and not Samsung or sprint - but I can't think of the make. I don't want to go dig for it right now. I've got a Nokia 4G touchscreen with internet (albeit crappy internet). 6-year-old design, got it three years ago for fifty bucks, and it does what I want. I've owned mostly Nokias the last 20 years because they're tough and easy.

Phones, isn't it funny?
This was my first cell phone:
This is my cell phone now (Samsung A-21): I figure we preferred them smaller when the primary purpose was for calls. Now that they're mini-computers, we prefer them to be bigger so that we can have an adequate screen from which to see our content.
I carry two cell phones so this is a good thing for me.
This was my introduction to telephony...
