Indian doctor duped into buying 'Aladdin's lamp' for $41,600
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-54759863

Quote: As part of the con, they even pretended to conjure up spirits from the lamp, in line with the tale from The Arabian Nights, Indian media report.

The men had reportedly wanted more than $200,000 for the lamp but settled for a down payment of $41,600.
A third, female, suspect is at large.

The doctor reportedly filed a complaint with local police in Meerut, western Uttar Pradesh, earlier this week.
In the complaint, quoted by NDTV, he said he met the two men when he began treating a woman he understood to be their mother over the course of a month.

"Gradually they started telling me about a baba (godman) whom they claimed also visited their home. They started brainwashing me and asked me to meet this baba," he says, according to NDTV. He then did meet the baba "who seemed to perform such rituals."

I can definitely relate to being brainwashed by random people visiting my home. Well, not really.

I really hope that this was a naturopath or chiropractor.

I find it especially humorous, since I have the actual lamp, which I keep it right next to excalibur. Luckily, my pet Griffin protects them from prying eyes, and those that wish to steal them.

If this doctor is interested in real estate, I have several bridges for sale. With, or without trolls.

I'll bet it was in "excellent" condition, to boot. "Only rubbed once!"

Is believing in the powers of an alleged magic lamp any more ludicrous than
people believing in the powers of an imaginary god?
I'm a creationist;   I believe that man created God.

Well in a way yes.
The lamp at least could be tested. I'd have asked for a "test drive", I don't mind losing one wish to see if it's real.
I'd rub it and wish for $41,600 and tell the guys I'll buy the lamp as soon as the money appears.

You have be wary of the Monkey's Paw Rule, which is "spend your last wish wishing you hadn't made your first two wishes."

I have trouble feeling much sympathy for superstitious fools with enough money to attract grifters. My difficulty is that I also don't like the grifters who take advantage of them. When it comes to grifters who take advantage of fools, it isn't an easy choice. I guess it comes down to the difference between superstitious fools and innocent ones.

I had a magic lamp but the Genie was hard of hearing. I made my first wish and POOF.... A very small man who was playing the piano appeared.

Who the hell wishes for a nine inch pianist?

Thanks for that info. I'll have to see if it's available on DVD.
