Only later did it occur to me that I should have asked back "What do you think a chemical reaction would feel like? Would we fizz?" What we experience is precisely what it feels like to be a chemical process - a particular set of processes, obviously, but chemical processes nonetheless. He passed away before I could fit that into some later conversation - and presumably therefore escaped cessation of soul and is enjoying existence with angels. If we are nothing more than a "matrix of chemical processes", why don't you kill somebody, and when the police will catch you, say to them "We are nothing more than a matrix of chemical processes, so I just killed somebody, because hey, it's just chemical process all"...maybe they will believe you, but I don't think so... We are actually more than chemical processes. Human beings are are a combination of systems and processes (evolved from and based on complex chemical processes) from which sentience emerges, among other things. The bit about "why not just kill someone" is a reductio ad absurdam argument which is not based on reality.
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.
