Some time ago in discussion with a friend of mine (now deceased) who was solidly religious and believed in what could be considered a soul, whereas my belief is we are nothing more than a matrix of chemical processes, he said, "But it doesn't FEEL like it's just a chemical reaction".  Only later did it occur to me that I should have asked back "What do you think a chemical reaction would feel like?  Would we fizz?"  What we experience is precisely what it feels like to be a chemical process - a particular set of processes, obviously, but chemical processes nonetheless.  He passed away before I could fit that into some later conversation - and presumably therefore escaped cessation of soul and is enjoying existence with angels. 

If we are nothing more than a "matrix of chemical processes", why don't you kill somebody, and when the police will catch you, say to them "We are nothing more than a matrix of chemical processes, so I just killed somebody, because hey, it's just chemical process all"...maybe they will believe you, but I don't think so...
To believe we are chemical processes its "cool" to think maybe in a fantasy, but in reality, it's not that simple!

We are just a series of chemical processes but that does not minimize the importance of our existence or the feeling of awe we can have experiencing the world and other people.

We are actually more than chemical processes. Human beings are are a combination of systems and processes (evolved from and based on complex chemical processes) from which sentience emerges, among other things. The bit about "why not just kill someone" is a reductio ad absurdam argument which is not based on reality.
