China will rewrite the Bible and Quran to 'reflect socialist values' amid crackdown on the country's religious groups, a report has revealed.
New editions must not contain any content that goes against the beliefs of the Communist Party, according to a top party official. Paragraphs deemed wrong by the censors will be amended or re-translated.
Though the Bible and Quran were not mentioned specifically, the party called for a 'comprehensive evaluation of the existing religious classics aiming at contents which do not conform to the progress of the times'.
This makes China look like a totalitarian state that is also a bit of a joke. The rewriting of religious texts seem to me to mostly be a waste of time, but it says something about how the Communist Party of China (CPC) sees the need to be all-pervasive in the lives of its citizens.
I wonder if the Eddas and the Iliad and the Odyssey will also eventually be rewritten to "reflect the socialist values" of the CPC. Why not also Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter while they are at it?
China has previously lashed out at portrayals of history that does not fit with the official historical account of the CPC. For example, I recall that the computer game Hearts of Iron II was banned in China because:
Quote:...the game portrays the various Chinese warlords as independent entities, while according to the PRC government they were nominally part of the Republic of China governed by the Chinese Nationalist government, represented in-game as 'Nationalist China'. Also, the Tibetan flag used in-game is banned in China. Paradox has stated that it will not reduce the level of historical accuracy in order to appease the PRC censors.
Like other totalitarian entities, the CPC wants to control all aspects of the lives of its citizens, and if reality begs to differ, then screw reality.
I hope to live to see the day the CPC collapses.

I'd like to re-write both of these also.

Shades of '1984.'--ALL printed matter was constantly revised, and the language simplified to "Newspeak".Complex ideas could not be expressed . However this is far too much far too soon and has the subtlety of a sledge hammer. Seems they don't realise that there are a billion Muslims in the world, and they will be livid. A Fatwa will be declared against China. Tough buns in if they import or export anything from or to Muslim countries, especially oil. Christians outside of China will get upset if the Chinese try that shit with the bible, but they will still have the REAL bible. ---Beside Muslims world wide will rally to support their Chinese brothers and sisters. The smuggling of Qurans into and around China will become a thing. Of course I could be completely wrong, it might be a storm in a teacup . My interest is only because of possible effects on world trade .
Will bacon play a role in this one?

The reference is to George Orwell's '1984' Smith, the protagonist, works in the Ministry Of Truth (I think) His job, and hundreds like him, is to constantly revise old newspapers EG say a person is purged; every photo and mention of that person anywhere is deleted.; HE NEVER EXISTED. The party saying was something like "Control the past and control the present" The party was creating a new language, called 'Newspeak' .In this language it was impossible to express nuance or complex thought .The goal was to reduce the original language to a total of 800 words. Coincidentally, possessing a vocabulary of that size in a foreign language is usually considered 'survival level' Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 has similar theme, but closer to Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' than to '1984' It's over 45 years since I've read those books . I tend to forget that not everyone read the same books in their youth (or indeed may be still experiencing their youth) My apologies for being so obtuse.
Is that a quote from Orwell or your take on the current state?
I would love to rewrite the Koran but I find disembowelment unappetizing.
One thing you never see: A guy in Boston Mass. with a Union flag yelling "The Nawth's gonna rise again!"

(as far as I can remember the book) I'm currently rewatching the 1984 remake of the 1956 original film . The original film, in black and white, is better imo . In reality, as far as I know, the PRC still takes excessive measures to control internet access in China. They already control TV and print media. Eg It is my understanding that: The Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 is not discussed in China and that those born after 1989 are unaware. Japan: School history books printed after 1945 gave a highly sanitised version of Japanese history from the 1930's to 1945 . The thoroughly documented 'Rape Of Nanking " (from Dec 1937) was omitted. As too the Japanese treatment of allied prisoners of war, including civilians. Japan also flatly denied the use of thousands female prisoners as "comfort women" in Japanese army brothels, for decades. Orwell was right .
If they print one that says "Allah is bullshit" that might be worth seeing.

[SERIOUS] New and improved Quran coming.
Will this be a new thing ?
When people start new threads, will they also characterize them ? [serious] [semi-serious] [mild to moderately serious] [not so very serious] [not at all serious] Time will tell.
Test
I'm somewhat notorious for derailing my own threads, so the [SERIOUS] tag helps me stay on the straight and narrow, no matter how boring that may be. It's also a flag for (wishful) expectations, unlikely as that may be at times.
