Lots of empires have learned how expensive it is to maintain an empire. Unfortunately, none are still around to give us advice.

True, but in the context of a debate or a speech, if you're anti-war and that's your big issue and you want to know someone is anti-war, you want them to plainly say that. Fortunately he's learned the ropes on these things.

I do note that Bernie has used the term "military-industrial complex" repeatedly of late so I think he is specifically harkening back to Eisenhower's warning.
