Ain’t it funny how that works.
When I was still working (pre Covid) the laboratory was desperate for more MTs. Students just aren’t going into medical technology anymore as it’s a science heavy degree but lower pay than other science led professions. When the grumbling became a roar, suddenly management found the money for pretty generous raises. Yay, happy med techs. Then Covid hit and even more workload and high absences due to techs coming down with Covid and, once again, wages were raised again and bonus monies for extra shifts (besides the time and a half for the overtime.
I enjoyed the first set of raises for only a few months then retired. If I had stayed another 2 years, it would have been even better but, I couldn’t physically do it anymore. It’s ok. It bumped my SS up anyway and I was prepared for retiring when I did.
My husband worked from home due to Covid and worked until last December 31st. He made more money in his final few years than we ever imagined because housing was booming and he’s a CAD designer. We paid off the house and, right now, SS pays all our bills leaving our savings for home improvements and fun stuff.
Conclusion is, the moneys is there, the head honchos just don’t want to pay. They had an advantage for so long with more workers than jobs that they got spoiled and greedy. Remember “whatever the market will bear”? Now, jobs are unfilled and corporate America just can’t wrap their head around the fact that they will fill the jobs when they offer higher wages. Workers are getting fed up with short staffing as well. Suddenly, unions are gaining in popularity again!
I guess it is funny in some dark and twisted way. But it's also so dumb that it beggars belief - without good wages one will not have good workers. I have no idea about med techs or CAD but even in my work inattentive or pissed worker can easily cause boss to lose thousands of euros of potentials profits. We're making things like this and let me tell you - tolerances for individual elements are less than 0.3mm. Already entire crew demanded raise and boss simply had to give it but he didn't learn a thing from it and some of most skilled workers left. Hell he nearly let me go before he remembered that there aren't really anyone that he can replace me with even when my raise is significant to me but not even small change to him.
That's capitalism for you I guess.

Your boss will just raise prices a bit to compensate. Nouveau Riche types should realize that when they pay low wages, the workers see that sports car with the prancing horse (Ferrari) and know who paid for it.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

At first he just nodded but after mere 30 minutes he had attack of the common sense and remembered that there ain't too many people who know how two of his most used machines work. So I've got quite the pay raise and promise of more (voluntary) hours at work if I will be interested in working overtime.
Good for you mate! Spend it wisely.
I will sure try.

It's one of plainer ones. I prefer ones that are intentionally made to look older.
I imagine he will. It's not like his clients lack the cash; supposedly we made something for Beyonce though I suspect that it is urban legend. However we definitely sell things to Dubai and customers there will not run of money anytime soon no matter how much boss will raise prices. And yes we sure know who pays for his luxuries but all in all it is not entirely bad work. I worked in far worse places and I'm content with staying there and slowly increasing my income.

Got a job.
Got a pay raise today and I didn't even have to ask for it. In fact entire crew got pay raise and promise of bonuses in next months if we will manage to produce as much stuff as boss plans call for. It's not unrealistic plan so bonuses will be achievable but I'm perfectly content with my new wage.

Congratulations! I started by working in Department Stores at minimum wage. And that never changed unless the Government mandated it. I finally got a job in an office, and after 3 months there, they gave me a 10% raise in pay.
I was amazed! I was inexperienced enough at the time to not know that businesses would do that on their own. I thought you had to be promoted to a more difficult job to get a raise. OK, I was really dumb in some ways at 20.
As a result, I moved from a roach-infested apartment with 4 other guys to one with a lot fewer roaches and only one other guy (we were just apartment-mates) and life was a lot easier!
So again "congrats" on the "pay raise and promise of bonuses". Sometimes life gets better one slow step at a time ...
