For the first time a german Cardinal is under suspicion of sexual abuse. Cardinal Hengsbach (died in 1991) who led the Bishopric of Essen for more than 30 years is suspected of sexual abuse of minors (raped a 16y old girl in 1954, with his brother).
Another woman accused him in 2010, and although the Bishopric denied any of this, money was paid to her......go figure.

I think its a little bit pointless, too little, too late. The Cardinal is dead for 30 years, and lots of people involved/responsible too.

Actually decades of abuse were known of in the choir of Benedict's brother.

I have to laugh when Catholics complain about a long sermon…they’re usually talking about more than 20 minutes! It’s nothing for Protestant preachers to go on for an hour and a half. However, Protestants actually hire their pastors and good entertaining sermons are a big factor. Catholics just assign priest who may or may not have any talent in delivering the homily. You’re kind of stuck with whom you get, which may be why priests rarely serve more than four years at any parish.

I’ve heard, but can’t confirm, that priests are being given more training in delivering better homilies. Too many parishioners now shop around for better homilies and better music. They aren’t supposed to do that but no one can complain when so many are leaving for good and they need any seat filled. The Catholic excuse that you’re there for Jesus and the Eucharist and not for the ambiance is falling on deaf ears these days.

Church knew of abuse claims against revered priest: researchers

Abbe Pierre, or Henri Groues, was a Capuchin monk and an ordained Catholic clergyman who died in 2007 aged 94. He left a legacy as a friend to the poverty-stricken and founder of the charities Emmaus and the Abbe Pierre Foundation.

Revered for his uncompromising position defending the homeless and other people on the margins of life in France, he regularly topped polls as the most popular public figure in the country.
On Wednesday, however, it was revealed that seven women had made allegations of sexual assault or harassment by the elderly cleric dating back to between 1970 and 2005.
And on Saturday, four researchers for an independent commission into sexual abuse in the French Catholic Church said that they had already presented testimonies accusing the preacher to the Church in October 2021.
"Among the 1,200 or so testimonies processed by our team, three involved Abbe Pierre," the four researchers wrote in an article published in Le Monde.

New abuse allegations emerge against once-venerated French priest

More abuse allegations have been made against Abbé Pierre, the late French Roman Catholic priest and campaigner who was long venerated as a modern-day saint.
In July, the Emmaus anti-poverty charity which Abbé Pierre founded said it had heard allegations of sexual assault and harassment from seven women and it believed them.
Emmaus has now decided to expunge Abbé Pierre from the organisation after 17 more women spoke out about having suffered abuse at his hands.
The priest, who died in 2007 aged 94, used to regularly appear in polls as one of the most popular French people of modern times because of his tireless work for the poor and homeless.
The Emmaus movement, which he founded in 1949, operates in more than 40 countries. In France, his caped and bearded figure became an emblem of Christian self-sacrifice.
Now, following a second release of witness statements gathered by Egaé, an independent consultancy, the movement has decided to remove Abbé Pierre’s name from its various organisations.

Quebec Catholic monks face class actions over decades of alleged sexual abuse

In a class action, more than 87 victims have come forward with allegations against the Brothers of Christian Instruction that date as far back as 1940. Several of the monks are now deceased.
In court documents, the accusers detail assaults at more than 20 schools run by the Brothers across the province of Quebec.
Most occurred between the 1950s and 1970s, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs told AFP.
"The plaintiffs allege in particular that the congregation was aware of the Brothers' sexual assaults on children, but that it preferred to move and protect the attackers rather than help the victims," they said in the court filings.

This equivocation is even more nonsensical when you realize that the genders assigned to nouns in the Romance languages are pretty much random. From my study of French and my glancing knowledge of Spanish, trying to guess the gender of a noun by how masculine or feminine it seems to you, is a fool's errand, as there's a 50% chance it seemed the other way to whoever originally decided what it would be. You ultimately just resort to memorizing the genders and what genderized pronouns "sound right" with what words.

Genderized nouns were the one area in which these languages are like English -- random, conflicting, made-up rules basically. In all other areas they are easier to learn and more consistent than English, but particularly since English lacks genderization, genderized nouns are just a bullshit to me, lol

At least it explains why non-native English speakers sometimes resort to "he" or "she" in referring to random inanimate objects.

The pope has already clearly stated that women cannot be priests and even if they could allow deconesses, it would be a more limited role than deacons.

Until there’s a pope that’s a radical liberal elected, it’s never going to change. Oh, they’ll give lip service to how important women are and how nuns serve the church but it’s not going to change. The church, due to all the losses of pewsitters is becoming more conservative, not less. This will continue as more folks are disgusted with the entrenched patriarchy of their “Mother Church”. Several women are starting to veil again for Mass…showing off their piety (or a bad hair day). The church is just continuing the irrelevance of their religion.

California sues Catholic hospital for denying emergency abortion

Sept 30 (Reuters) - California's attorney general on Monday sued a Catholic hospital accused of refusing to provide an emergency abortion in February to a woman whose water broke prematurely, putting her at risk of potentially life-threatening infection and hemorrhage.
Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta accused Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka of discriminating against pregnant patients and violating the state's law requiring hospitals to provide necessary emergency care.

The lawsuit, opens new tab, filed in Humboldt County Superior Court, seeks a court order to stop the hospital from denying medically necessary abortions in the future, as well as civil penalties.
"Providence is deeply committed to the health and wellness of women and pregnant patients and provides emergency services to all who walk through our doors in accordance with state and federal law," a Providence spokesperson said in an email, adding that the hospital was reviewing the lawsuit. "We are heartbroken over Dr. Nusslock's experience earlier this year."

The woman, chiropractor Anna Nusslock, was driven to another hospital 12 miles (19 km) away and was dangerously hemorrhaging by the time she reached the operating table, according to the lawsuit.
Nusslock, who was pregnant with twins, said at a press conference on Monday that doctors at Providence agreed that she needed an abortion to avoid life-threatening complications.
However, doctors said that they could not provide one because the Catholic-affiliated hospital's policy prohibited any intervention while they could hear "fetal heart tones" unless her life was in immediate danger, Nusslock added.

Before she left for nearby Mad River Community Hospital, a nurse gave her a bucket full of towels "in case something happens in the car," Nusslock said. The hospital's policy "inflicted on me needless protracted pain, bleeding and trauma," Nusslock added.
Bonta said Nusslock's ordeal was reminiscent of women's experiences in Republican-led states where abortion is banned. In California, Bonta added, the law is clear that hospitals must provide an abortion if it is medically necessary.

"We need hospitals to follow the law, at the bare minimum," Bonta said. "That is not too much to ask. ... If you are a human being, you can see how cruel this was."

Still hearing fetal heart tones in a twin pregnancy is rediculous. If one twin is miscarrying (which it sounds like) the other twin may continue to have heart tones yet be destined for death no matter how long they waited…thus killing the mother, which they almost did. The question should be asked if they heard two heart tones. I mean, it was obvious she was miscarrying and the fetuses had no chance. This waiting to see what God’s going to do has to end.
