Watched 'Captain Marvel' again tonight for about the 5th time.
The first viewing was odd because the original comic book Captain Marvel was dedicated Kree soldier fighting rather evil Skrulls. And the Kree had a majority of blue people who disliked the pink minority. Nice social statement at the time. And he just had standard advanced Kree tech. The Marvel movie changed things around. I don't really like it when movies do that. Basically, they just changed gender and color, ignored origins, all that. But I liked the movie. OK, they changed a lot. But if you hadn't read the comic books, you wouldn't know. It was basically a whole new origin but still about the Kree/Skrull Wars. I love the part where Captain Marvel is energy-chained by the Kree, told she is "just a human", and she recalls her determination in the face of failures. Then begins to understand her powers from the "Kree ship core explosion". And I loved the music. It was light-hearted but somewhat uplifting. I also loved it when she started destroying things. The music fit the action so well! Most superhero movies don't show you the character grow in ability. This one does. She is flung from a spaceship and discovers she can fly. She focuses her thoughts and finds energy beams. And she has a past on Earth. She has a few friends who knew her "before". She meets Nick Fury, gets a new outfit from the daughter of a fellow pilot, and it turns out the Skrulls are victims just looking for a safe home and she goes seeking for one with them. The tesseract was completely out of canon with the previous Marvel Universe, but hey, it was kind of a stand-alone movie and Marvel is not really big on consistency these days. So, as "just a movie", I really like it.

Watched Coast To Coast.
Two unlikely villains on the run in an ice-cream van. Very funny.

Ooh, damn - I'm in the middle of Conclave. So far, it's well written & engrossing.
I'll update when it's done. ![]()

Every performance was spot on. It had a lot to say about the church - all of it the complete truth. The sneaky fucks. I'll hope all the actual catholic clergy sees it & discusses it, but they won't. I'll hope any religionist person sees it - not happening. Lots of Italian spoken, with subtitles - a majority of Americans won't go near it for that reason alone. They won't know what they're missing, but that might be best. I do recommend it. ![]()

What movie did you last see?
Watched 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim'. I saw a trailer for it a month ago. Didn't expect to see it for free so soon.
OK, it was animated, but not badly. And it didn't actually involve "The Ring". It basically set a background for the Rohirrim. It was enjoyable enough. Positive Notes: It introduced Helm Hammerhand (of Helm's Deep in the later books). It sort of explained the women-warrior tradition among them (shield-maidens in a previously desperate time). It sort of introduced Gandalf (if you haven't read the 'Silmarillion'). And it introduces Saruman The White wizard as a beneficial character before he fell under Sauron's control. It seemed acceptably "canon". The main figure was Héra, daughter of Helm Hammerhand. I think they did well by her. Both thoughtful, strategic and brave in war. I thought it interesting that the narration started by saying that Héra was not remembered. I understood part of that at the end. She refused to marry and left on some adventure of her own never heard of again. So she left no lineage. I think her brother accepted the Rohirrim crown only when she refused it. Nice touch. Éowyn narrates the story of Héra, according to Wiki. I did not realize that at the time I watched. Which leads me to a slight negative. If Héra was "not remembered", how was Éowyn (200 years later) narrating her story? ![]() Another slight negative is that Gondor is considered an average power in the movie. According to LOTR, Gondor was at the height of power at the time. It had a true king of Aragon's lineage, not just a Steward (ending with Denethor). There are probably some other minor quibbles, but I thought it was worth the watching.

Dragon on Fire. It's so bad (translation to english, sounds, plot), hilarious.

I just watched the Spielberg re-make of West Side Story. i've watched it before. It was great. But this time, I really knew all of the scenes and outcomes.
It was like "no don't do that" over and over again. But you can't change a movie. I was just in tears this time, knowing the ending. I'm not usually like that about movies, but West Side Story is all about tragedy. And it really hit me at this viewing. A struggle of ethnic immigrant groups trying to fit in to a new place, but also having to fight for "honor". A cross-cultral love of hope that failed. Damn, things haven't really changed much since he original 1961 movie...

A slightly older film - quite good. It's about surviving the trauma of survival in maybe-war & post war/occupation - a total cluster fuck.

The second half of the movie "Dune". What a fucking joke. I won't waste my time explaining the issues. Anyone who has read the book knows the issues with both movies, but the second movie is over the top stupid for not following the story line. Color me surprised.
