A place to post things that are weird, strangely beautiful, or not something you see every day.

Or, more likely, doesn't see...

My wife and I watched a David Attenborough nature documentary about praying mantises last night that stated there are over 18,000 species worldwide. They are all sorts of weird shapes and sizes.

I doubled checked this number on the internet, which says there are around 2300 or 2400 praying mantis species.  I guess Attenborough got the number wrong.   Blush

Praying mantises can see in three dimensions. They are the only insects known to do so.

Can I ask exactly how entomologists discovered this?  Seriously?

Attenborough said the same thing, though I don't know how they know.  It may be because of the type of eyes they have compared to other insects.

I used to buy Praying Mantis nests and hang them in the garden - these guys are great at patrolling for bugs. They are strange creatures, they seem to look you right in the eye, and they follow you with their eyes. I suppose normally we just can't tell when other insects do this.

A couple of days ago there was one on the wall by my front door and I noticed that it swiveled its head like it was looking at me so I took a couple of steps over to the other side and it turned its head to follow me. It was the first time I'd ever seen an insect appear to be aware of something a few feet away.
