The Oblivion Remake has a bad case of early game suckage. Your character starts out really weak so everything kills you fast. I've found my self quick saving after every encounter so not to lose progress.

I dropped off the forum for a while, but see you've been getting into the Atelier series as well. Ryza was the first one I played. Loved it, now I'm working on Ryza 2. I'm bad about going too deep in crafting, so I'm taking forever to finish the story. I picked up a few of the older series recently with a Steam sale. Probably will hold off on the newer series/remakes as I just have too much to play already. Might as well wait until they're cheap.

I also recently decided to learn Japanese. Part of that was a result of playing Ryza, & realizing the voice acting was Japanese only. I kept wondering what she was saying during comments as well as how the subtitle translation/localization varied from the original Japanese. I picked up 2 introductory Japanese focused educational games:
Learn Japanese RPG: Hiragana Forbidden Speech
Wagotabi
I played through HFS first, then Wagotabi. I feel like HFS was an easier introduction, but Wagotabi has a broader scope. I'm now confident reading hiragana, can almost legibly write hiragana, maybe 90% there for katakana, & can usually get the stroke order right for kanji. Still very beginner level for vocabulary & iffy with grammar. I ran out of basic study gameplay, so I've had to put more effort into teaching myself.

A local game store had a random pile of Japanese market PS3 games. Turns out that while the PS3 is technically region locked, only a tiny handful of games for it are region locked. So, with Atelier kicking off my interest in Japanese, I grabbed the copy of シャリーのアトリエ (Atelier Shallie) & started trying to play it. I play with a notepad & my phone open to jisho.org. It's a slow process, but my katakana skills have improved a lot, & I'm making progress with kanji/vocab. The only downside is that I've realized that Shallie isn't as casual friendly as Ryza. Head's up Danu. Not sure how far back it goes, but at least the Dusk trilogy has a timer of sorts tied to multiple endings. Since I'm guaranteed to be stupidly slow trying to play while learning a language, I'm doomed to the bad endings. Still enjoying the game, but it'd be a better experience without that.

If you're interested, you might try emulation. I don't know which ones are Japanese releases, but I notice that Vimm's Lair has a handful of Atelier ROMs for the PS3.

Debating getting a controller with hall effect sticks. I'm largely a masher due to my handicap and it's a wired controller, too, but I'm still interested in trying it.

Thanks, but it's easy enough to change the language on the Steam copies, & they were well within my budget. Like I said, I won't be ready for the new ones for a long time anyways.

I added hall effect sticks to my Switch Joycons. Hall effect definitely feels better than worn our potentiometers, but if you handed me a fresh controller with one of each, I doubt I could tell the difference. Like, I think they're worth buying, but don't expect a better out-of-the-box experience.

Apparently you can't level up unless you sleep in a bed in Oblivion. Gee, I wish someone had told me that twenty hours ago when I started playing!

Started Lord of Hatred now. Campaign isn't all that interesting but reworked skill trees are.

I beat the Sakuko-like creature in Silent Hill f. Unfortunately, I used up most of my healing items in the process. At least I know how to defeat her now.

I checked the number of hours that I've played Silent Hill f. I've played 29 hours. Somehow it seemed like more.

I've been playing the Oblivion Remaster and it's a lot of fun but I do have a few complaints. The biggest one is it takes a good 3 seconds to open any menu, which is something you do all the time. I really wish they had fixed the load times from the original game. The humanoid races look like something out of the uncanny valley. It also does a poor job explaining key things to you, like leveling up and what everything means. If you really want to know you have to look up guides.

I played the original D&D the one will typewriter graphics. I used a quadrille desk pad and plotted all forty levels, completely.

That's a really good one.

The Oblivion Remake is extremely addictive in a D&D sort of way but every time you open the menu it takes ten seconds. I've literally counted out loud it takes so long. Ten seconds. Over the course of the game you have to wait several hours on the damn menu. It's a remake; why didn't they fix this?! And you open the menu all the time- when you loot an enemy or chest, quicksave, equip spells of items, open the map, talk to shopkeepers, etc. It's enough to bring the game down a score on that alone.

Yeah I'm getting around to playing older games I never got around to playing when I was younger, for whatever reason. Also playing Freelancer and planning on starting Diablo I. Having a good time with it.  Big Grin

I hope I'm not jinxing it by saying this but there must have been an update because this issue got fixed. Thank the nonexistent gods too because it was terrible!
