religious beliefs? Surely they should be expecting that their God will fry the lot of them, perpetrators and their defenders alike. Or do they really believe that beaming up a few prayers to heavenly father will be adequate contrition to get them off the hook?

Don't know about other religions but Christians, yes, a handful of the right "forgive me" prayers does get them off the religious hook (the Church will get them off the secular hook), and the really pernicious thing is they know that before they commit their crimes.
