Aussie "Church" Selling Bleach as COVID-19 Cure

The Australian chapter of an international church that peddles bleach as a cure for coronavirus is
selling this product locally. The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing claims chlorine dioxide
is a "miracle cure". It sells the industrial bleach as Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), stating it can cure
COVID-19 as well as autism, acne, cancer, diabetes and more.

The US leader of the church, "Archbishop" Mark Grenon, claims he wrote to President Donald Trump
about its "sacramental cleansing water" days before Trump's infamous press conference in which he
suggested injecting disinfectant as a potential coronavirus cure.

In a video, Grenon said he told Mr Trump that chlorine dioxide could "rid the body of COVID-19...
"There is so much evidence proving it is a wonderful detox through oxidation that kills 99% of the
pathogens in the body, that is why we have so many testimonies," he said.



Associate professor Ken Harvey, an expert in public health from Monash University in Melbourne, first
came across MMS on an Australian health shop website 10 years ago and made a complaint to the
Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).  The product has re-emerged on the MMS Australia website,
which is run by Charles Barton, who describes himself in emails as a bishop of the Genesis II Church.
His "Doc Barton" products include "water purification drops" which contain 28% sodium chlorite, as well
as separate bottles of hydrochloric acid "activator".

Legally (so far) Barton has got away with this because he sells the MMS for "water purification" purposes.

Which indicates to me nothing more than our TGA is ultimately a toothless tiger, forever 'threatening',
'cautioning', or 'warning' these scammers.  (The TGA = the FDA but with less legal powers.)

It almost certainly only kills coronaviruses by way of killing the host. Viruses are so much simpler than us that the effective dose of most antiseptics is orders of magnitude more than the LD₅₀ for humans. Take isopropanol for example. It'll kill the coronaviruses in your body once it reaches ~70%! You'll be dead and embalmed by that point. With an LD₅₀ of ~100 mg/kg, your average adult isn't going to easily survive ingesting 10 grams of ClO₂. Once that's diluted into the person's body it's completely ineffective at killing coronaviruses despite being exceptionally effective at killing the human.

"So, it would be possible that the virus could persist and remain infectious in or on the body of someone who has died," says Dr. Ilan Schwartz, infectious disease specialist and assistant professor at the University of Alberta. 

During the first SARS outbreak in 2003, data suggested the virus could remain infectious in bodily fluids such as blood, urine and feces for 72 to 96 hours, says Jason Kindrachuk, microbiologist and assistant professor at the University of Manitoba.

"This doesn't perfectly mimic what happens in a person, but it gives us some ideas on how stable coronaviruses are in different bodily fluids and may give some information on SARS-CoV-2," Kindrachuk said.

This means it is still possible for someone who handles or touches a body infected with the virus to also become infected, says Schwartz.

So killing yourself with bleach may still leave the virus alive to carry on.

The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing has been claiming chlorine dioxide is a "miracle
cure". For years it has sold the industrial bleach as 'Miracle Mineral Solution' (MMS), stating it
can cure things like autism, acne, cancer, diabetes and now COVID-19

Church in Australia selling bleach fined

Following an investigation by ABC News last week, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
today announced it had issued 12 infringement notices totalling $151,200 to MMS Australia for
alleged unlawful advertising of MMS and other medicines.



Associate Professor Ken Harvey, an expert in public health at Monash University, has been lobbying
the TGA to ban the sale of MMS in Australia for the past 10 years.  "It is dangerous," he said. "Deaths
have occurred; serious admissions to hospital from this particular substance."

The website is run by Charles Barton, who describes himself in emails to customers as a bishop
of the Genesis II Church.  In an email Barton said, "We have no comment, except to point out that
this is a shocking and egregious attack on freedom of expression and freedom of religion
in Australia.  (It's nothing at all to do with "religion freedom"... that's just a strawman.)
 
The very constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia is being trashed and thrown out the window,
no less."

—I note that Barton refused to be drawn on the alleged efficacy of MMS, or comment on the TGA fines.
