Handful of GOP senators threaten to delay Senate coronavirus bill
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congres...g-n1168766

Quote: A handful of Republican senators on Wednesday threatened to delay the $2 trillion coronavirus spending bill over a proposed increase to unemployment insurance.

In a statement, Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said that the bill could provide a "strong incentive for employees to be laid off instead of going to work" because some people could theoretically make more by being unemployed.

"This isn’t an abstract, philosophical point — it’s an immediate, real-world problem," they continued. "If the federal government accidentally incentivizes layoffs, we risk life-threatening shortages in sectors where doctors, nurses, and pharmacists are trying to care for the sick, and where growers and grocers, truckers and cooks are trying to get food to families' tables."

This is nonsense. Unemployment insurance pays out 40% of wages paid over the last four fiscal quarters.

They're banking on people being uneducated or unexperienced. Anyone who's been on UI knows the struggle.

So they are claiming that USA job market is so shitty that people will chose to live on gov assistance instead of working? Unintentional honesty can be surprisingly enlightening.

More like they assume ordinary people are so dishonest and lazy that they can't be trusted.

Handful of GOP senators threaten to delay Senate coronavirus bill
The prospect of a planned Senate vote on a $2 trillion stimulus package in response to the coronavirus pandemic dimmed Wednesday as senators threatened to hold up the legislation.

First, four GOP senators said they could delay the bill over a core unemployment insurance provision.

Then, Sen. Bernie Sanders said he would delay the bill if his Republican colleagues did not drop their opposition.

Fucking partisanship as usual.

I am sooooo sick of it.

The calculation must vary by state, I just looked at Nebraska and it's different, but Sasse is still an ass.

Yeah, mentioned one of my misapprehensions in post #7, and there may be more.

Were people ok with it when Dems were holding it up to put more protections on the 500 billion corporate slush fund? I mean, based on the conversation I had in that other thread and the likes each post got, I see a bit of a double standard being applied, here. Why is it suddenly partisan today, when we were fighting the good fight yesterday?

Are we going to let Republicans gut the parts of the bill aimed at helping regular people, and just shrug our shoulders since we need it now?

Sanders wants to keep the existing worker protections, and increase the oversight on the 500 billion corporate wellfare. As it stands, the small businesses that take the money earmarked for them must use it to pay workers, and are forbidden from layoffs or cutting wages.
The large companies that take the money have no such restrictions, and are fee to take the money, cut wages, and lay off workers.

Every other country, even the UK which is notoriously divided, managed to push out help to JUST workers without attaching a huge corporate wellfare bill to it. Not only that, but it's not really 500 billion, that money is just to take up the potential losses of the 4.5 trillion that's actually open for loans to large corporations, or so I heard an economist explain this morning.

What are we supposed to do, just let another bloated corporate welfare bill through, without any real oversight or rules, and minimal protections for actual workers?

As usual, it's a no-win situation for Americans. Hold it up to demand basic oversight and maintained worker protection, and we're screwed. Let Republicans have what they want so we can get it passed so working families can get the crumbs they approved of, and we're still screwed.

If one man on earth deserves to die of this pandemic, it's Mitch. And I'm not normally vindictive. It's always him getting his cronies to stop the gov't from functioning at all, for well over a decade now.

Boeing CEO says they won't take government bailout money if it comes with government stake in equity.
He says they will "Look at other option....and we have plenty of them".

If Boeing has plenty of other options, why are they begging for bailout money?

Oh, for fuck sake.  Facepalm

Even if true, it would be a tiny drop in the bucket.

Lindsay Graham is a real douchebag.  He's got his knickers in a twist because he lost the slush fund.

They didn't lose the slushfund.  It's still 500 billion.  It just has a panel of 5 as an oversight committee, the exact same amount of oversight that Obama got for the 2008 bailout bill.

Did I miss some new news?

I was and I sure as shit can't see equating the two.  The greedy corporate motherfuckers always have their hands out.... no matter how much fucking money they have in them already.

The fucks aren't against 'socialism' when they are in the receiving line.

Sorry, I should have been more precise.  They lost the unaudited, pigs at the trough, slush fund.

I read this morning the fed would provide up to an additional $600 a week on top of the normal benefit until someone reaches their regular full time pay. So if your regular benefit is $250 a week you could draw $850 a week as long as it doesn't exceed your regular pay. The objection is that lazy people won't have an incentive to work if they can get full pay for sitting at home.
