Comet ATLAS
Coming soon to a sky near you, Comet ATLAS is brightening very rapidly. If it survives then it could become visible to the unaided eye in the next week or two. Its peak magnitude in early May is difficult to predict but best bets range from an impressive magnitude +1 to a dazzling -5! The latter would make it visible in broad daylight.

Yes, I know, yet another harbinger of doom. Just what we needed.

I'd like to see some charting to help us find it now.

I know whose doom I'd like for it to predict! I can just imagine the religulous looking at that portent in the sky...and buying more toilet paperDodgy

sheeit Jerry read the link. No portent of doom in there. It might just burn out before we get the best views.

We should be fine. It's observing planetary distancing.

We should call Bruce Willis and have him ready, just in case.

Looks like it's mucking about off the tip of the Big Dipper right now.

Slated to pass through Perseus round about perihelion, so well-located for northern hemisphere observers.

thanks man, I am a relative novice but I can always locate the dippers Big Grin
We have clear skies at night for the next two. Already plotting a drive to the top of a nearby pass to get rid of the big city lights.

If it gets as bright as they're predicting then just look up. It will get difficult to miss if it gets into the negative magnitudes even with light pollution.

I am talking about now, not in May. It may not survive intact till the high magnitude times.

Cosmic traffic lights. Betelgeuse dimming and then ATLAS showing up.

Oh, great! Along comes a great opportunity for astrophotography and I sold my observatory in 1990.  Facepalm
