Completely missed that. I feel so foolish.

SETI added to the plot line of many movies.

Yes, yes it is. It is not a good result, but it is "a result".

Irrelevant result is irrelevant.

Irrelevant for you. Imagine you are someone who KNOWS there is life around and that life is constantly trying to contact us. This result will help those poor souls to understand that their theories may not be so true.

I wouldn't be comfortable basing any statement of fact on such a small sampling. If we had to characterize this result, I'd choose the word "inconclusive".

And that would still be "a result". Every result is a result.

At the very least it tells us that either advanced civilisations are not that common, or that if they are then then there is some kind of technology that they rapidly advance to using which we can't detect. That is still useful information.

Scientific research is an exploration through a search space. Most hypotheses are wrong. Only by finding out that they are incorrect can you come up with ones that are correct.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my agreement was implicit in my use of the word "result" in my reply.

That doesn't change the fact that it is an inconclusive result. That result and three bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Compare a space 20 ly in any direction with the entire universe. This does not even equal saying one grain of sand makes a beach.

Oh, I didn't realise they were only looking at such a small bit of space.

They've been listening for twenty years. That would be the size of the sample bubble. Diminish that by the amount of space they weren't listening to in that bubble. It was a blue sky project, and I had them on BOINC as long as they were folding.

Bornean head hunters would disagree.

I'd take the head hunters, they had scruples.
