Time To Ban Boxing?

Time To Ban Boxing?
I know this thread could generate a lot of aggro, so I'm happy to affirm upfront that
I'm totally against boxing as an alleged "sport".  In my humble opinion, it should be
banned globally, and phased out over, say, a 5-year period, or whatever.

What prompted me to bring this up was this report in my paper this morning, reminding
me of a 23-year-old boxer, Braydon Smith, who lost his life after his fight in 2015 against
John Moralde, here in Australia.

Tyson Fury beats Deontay Wilder by TKO to win WBC heavyweight world championship in Las Vegas.

The condition boxers too often suffer from is chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE),
previously called the "punch drunk" syndrome, boxer’s dementia or dementia pugilistica.
This causes progressive memory problems, personality change and slowness of movement
and is now considered a possible precursor of Alzheimer’s disease.

Blows to the head cause two different kinds of injury. The face is cut and bruised by
direct impacts, but damage to the brain is caused largely by rotational acceleration
of the cerebral cortex around the much smaller midbrain and spinal cord. This damage
may be aggravated by boxing gloves since they add weight and thus energy to punches,
causing more rotational acceleration.

Amongst contact sports, boxing is a special case.  No other sport has the express goal of
causing injury to the brain. That's certainly the aim of professional boxing. Even in amateur
boxing, blows to the head are crucial, and protective headgear may not stop injury from
rotational acceleration.

John Corsellis, a neuroscientist specialising in brain trauma studies at the Maudsley
Hospital in London, has called for a ban on boxing—writing a research paper published in
the BMJ (British Medical Journal 1989). He further said, "My opinion is that the brain
should not be the target in any sport, and no amount of juggling with the regulations can
take away that risk. Experienced and outstanding boxers are themselves aware of the
risk, difficult as it may be for them eventually to call a halt." (New Scientist 2013).

Medical authorities in Australia are calling for a national ban on boxing. "We believe that
a so-called sport where two people knock each other in the head as often as you possibly
can to win a bout seems rather barbaric," the Australian Medical Association president
Shaun Rudd said in 2015.  "You’re not allowed to hit the organs beneath the belt, whereas
you’re allowed to hit the organ above your shoulder, which is the most important organ in
the body."

—I know in advance that American boxing fans will be outraged by any suggestions of a
total ban on boxing, but I then take note that these same sorts of people elected their
current President, who many consider to also be brain damaged.

Or maybe they should turn boxing into the fake, dramatic show that wrestling is?

I agree but boxing is tame compared to the UFA or MMA shit that goes on.

The thing is that professionals know the risk and take it in exchange for the money.  They are adults making an adult decision.  In that it is like people who continue to smoke cigarettes knowing what we now know.

I feel the same way about football and to a slightly lesser degree hockey.  The pros know the risk but what about all the kids playing it for nothing but dreams of glory?

Also, the people who climb mountains despite inclement weather and having been warned, and then require rescues that are super expensive and dangerous. At the very least they should have to pay for the rescue.

People make bad decisions regarding their own bodies all the time. Extreme sports, boxing, football, mountain climbing, down to tanning beds and what they eat or smoke and so forth. We can't be prohibiting all of that. So where do you draw the line? What about the freedom of choice when it concerns your own body?

I will add, that Wrestling is predetermined and is a who for other people to watch, yet around 20 years ago dudes where smashing steel chairs [which are very real] into each others skulls and the such like - These days there is a much bigger focus on not bashing things into each others heads, as many people over the years have had serious concussion issues from certain moves/weaponry.

She played a very horny older lady in an old sitcom called Golden Girls. She is horny in that clip, and spraying cold water on her neck to cool off.

I wonder if that works.  I guess there isn't always time for a cold shower.

Should we ban any sport where someone could potentially be severely injured? What about snowboarding? OMG, people could die in avalanches!! Let's ban it!

It's not the self-damage that concerns me. Go BASE jumping, insult a whole biker gang, or attack a grizzly bear bare-handed if you want. Its the damage to others.

Good point!  How about walking around without a helmet?  Fainting would be so much safer if everyone standing on two feet wore one.

The singular, winning premise of boxing is that you give your opponent a deliberate concussion.
No other sport has that intentional level of brutality.  In fact, if one was to knock out somebody
in the street with a king hit, he'd be charged with assault, GBH, or even manslaughter.

Apparently fighting inside ropes, in an auditorium, negates those crimes.  What a travesty.

As I cited in my OP,  John Moralde killed Braydon Smith, in 2015, but walked away scot-free.  He
should, at the least, have been charged with manslaughter—killing another person but with no intent
to do so.  I could also ask the question:  Why is is it that this killer is still allowed to box?  How many
other opponents does he have to kill in order to be rubbed out?  One more?  5 maybe?

There is a lot of injury in pro-wrestling since it involves a bunch of giant men or women jumping and slamming each other in accordance to a coregraphy.

@SYZ How would you rate olympic boxing? It's fairly different from Oxford boxing.

Indeed it is.  The contestants get punched in the head for nothing and the brain injury is the same.
