Netflix releasing "Messiah."

Quote:Netflix delves into hotbed of controversy with ‘Messiah’

How would the world react if an all-powerful divine figure emerged in today’s rapid-fire social media climate?
That’s the question Netflix’s upcoming series, Messiah poses.
And if there’s one truism in Hollywood it’s this: there’s no pleasing everyone when depicting holy figures or events.
Noah sparked outrage with Muslims over its portrayal of the prophet and was banned in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
Jews were livid when Mel Gibson came out with The Passion of the Christ, and accused the film of delving into anti-Semiticetic tropes.
Netflix, though, isn’t shy about courting controversy and is moving ahead with its plans to release Messiah at the beginning of the year.

Get ready for more riots when the nutjobs of 3 religions lose their shit.

I think the premise of the series is that the Christ-figure is actually the Antichrist. At least that's what I gathered from the preview I saw the other day.

I think this allows them to make some commentary on the hypothetical you mention, because since they're depicting a FALSE messiah, it lets them off the hook with the Christers. To an extent anyway.

However ... it could also easily become a high-budget version of Left Behind -- I wonder who is behind it and whether any of them are fundies. Or if they are taking consulting from fundies. Going to have to poke around on that one.

Hm. I don't know. Michael Petroni is an Aussie whose past work has an emphasis on religious and para-religious topics, including a series titled Miracles which was about "A Course in Miracles", dubbed "a spiritual version of the X-Files". He likes themes of good vs evil with distinct religious content it seems. Till Human Voices Wake Us is another example, with a protagonist who dies and appears to be reincarnated years later.

So I don't know. The guy likes woo and has made a career of leveraging people's liking for it. I can't fault it as a business decision but my concern is that this series will not be a biting commentary on the dangers of religious hysteria or something.

In the original report it tells us what the muslims were pissed about and what the jews were pissed about but fails to mention that the xhristards are pissed about everything!

Xhristards got pissed when Starbucks changed their fucking coffee cups/

Sounds fascinating .I'll look forward to seeing it.

The big Hollywood money has never really liked controversy, in film or TV. (even more)   Fully aware that you can't please everyone, their mantra has always been to offend as few people as possible. Hence the absolute  dreck of the overwhelming majority of Film and  TV which  has alway been produced.

Perhaps largely due to Netflix and other companies, free to air TV no longer has as much money.  Their solution has been the oxymoronic 'reality TV.  They all annoy me, but few as much as the phoney cooking and talent contest.

OT; Jamie Oliver has apparently gone bankrupt .Good, the arrogant  crunt.

Hollywood wants a sure thing.

Sure things make money.

That's why they've made 157 Star Wars movies that are all the same.

Yair, but they still make a lot of duds.

Perhaps that's one  reason film makers are presently so lazy with the boring Marvel franchise.  They will keep making them as long as they make money. Same with Disney and Star Wars,  which I think are only average.  But then I'm picky ,I pretty much lost interest in Star Wars after the first  three.

Finding the Harry Potter spinoffs quite boring.

Thought Martin Scorcese's "The Irishman" boring , predictable  and an hour too long.(should have used young actors)  --love all three Godfather movies, still watch them about once year.  Plus Goodfellas, Casino and The Gangs Of New York, which I'm presently watching for about the fifth time.

I guess I've become jaded in my old age.

Still like the trashy 'penny dreadfuls' such as 'Taken' , 'John Wick' and anything with Jason Statham.

Still, my wife and I sat through it. I'm not sure why. I felt pretty much the same about it.

One big cognitive dissonance was DeNiro, an Italian with a New York Italian accent, playing an Irishman without even an attempt at the correct accent. And if they were going to de-age him for much of the movie, they could have reshaped his nose while they were at it.

Epic mis-casting, if you ask me.

We felt we were watching a class reunion where they just said fuck it, we're going to do whatever we want.

Honestly we enjoyed The Two Popes more than The Irishman. Anthony Hopkins never disappoints. DeNiro is a little more dicey.

Main problem with The Two Popes is that it went too easy on the Church. They probably had to, to film in some of those locations. At least The Irishman didn't whitewash the Teamsters or the mob.

Yair. When De Niro is good, he's very very  good, and when  he's not, he's horrid (to paraphrase). As in those 'comedies'  he's been in over the last few years.  He was downright embarrassing . Of course Ben Stiller is always embarrassing, along with Adam Sandler and Jack Black.  Deadpan Coffee Drinker

Been debating with myself about seeing the Pope movie; subject matter doesn't appeal. Rattinger was a reactionary old turd. Francis comes across as a dithery fool who is trying to please everyone while actually changing as little as possible.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is my belief that nobody becomes Pope who doesn't want the job and who is unaware of what the job entails. It is my opinion that workings of the Holy See have little to do with sanctity and everything to do with politics. That it as been that way at least since the time of the Borgia and Medici Popes ,during the renaissance. Probably in fact for far longer, since the Holy See was established ,allegedly by saints Peter and Paul, in the first century.

OT: Can't remember where I read this so I might be wrong. That the Pope of the day was warned, by somebody significant, NOT to make the clergy celibate ----in the Fifth century. Because of the danger of 'degeneracy' .

And...

Scientists Are Pissed That Netflix Is Legitimizing Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop:

The news that Netflix this year signed a deal for a series with Gwyneth Paltrow and her
wellness brand, Goop, has left scientists and doctors aghast that the world’s largest
streaming service might give her pseudoscience a powerful platform. The pro-science
community is worried that Goop will use Netflix to promote unproven regimens and
products like jade vagina eggs, "biofrequency" stickers, charcoal toothbrushes, vaginal
steaming, colonics, and more.

"It is very frustrating whenever these pseudoscientific voices get a bigger platform", said
Timothy Caulfield, a professor of health law and science policy at the University of Alberta,
author of Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?.

Well, I was paying $65 a month for Foxtel.  I now pay $14 a month for Netflix. Quite happy with that.

I do not take moral responsibility  for unethical businesses, but will refuse to use them if  appropriate, in my opinion.

Wow look at all of the religious snowflakes in the comments of the YouTube trailer. Pathetic.

Actually, the goofy shit like pseudoscientific documentaries was one of the things I enjoyed on Netflix. I'm not a fan of woo, but there's a place for simply letting people have choice.

A fascinating figure. Especially if you read the Gospels as  fiction. Judas is useful to trolls of Christian sites ... not entirely unlike myself.  Tongue   Snort.
I use him to demonstrate that Jesus gave Judas "communion" (the sacrament) even though he *knew* he was a about to betray him.
They have a hard time arguing that those who have abortions are nonredeemable or gay people cannot receive communion.

I think some short stories and animated cartoons have done that one.  Not that I can recall the titles.  I think The Simpsons have taken a couple whacks at it.  Was it Heinlein who wrote a short story about god being imprisoned for millennia and escaping, only to find Man in control?

Judas (assuming the existence of all the biblical characters for discussion), was indeed more interesting than Jesus. When I was in college, I discovered the Jesus Christ: Superstar album. At least that made the characters sort of real. I memorized the lyrics and won bets for producing the next line. But Judas was more real in that.
