The idea that hell was not forever because God is merciful was an idea that Origen suggested.  The Orthodox Christians reading their new Testaments agreed Hell was forever, and labeled Origen's opinion heresy, and unbiblical.  To abandon the claims of the NT on the eternal nature of Hell means abandoning the NT as true and trustworthy revelation.  And the orthodox are correct about that.
