Yeah, but kids are a lot of work and effort. What kind of "me" time can you get with a couple of kids whose needs you're supposed to put before your own?

And I am outraged by people who breed like rabbits. I guess we're even.

Also, it's not *my* precious genes that are going to be living on a ravished planet, with extreme weather and famines.

Idiots.

Interesting, lots of voluntarily childless folks (including myself) on this forum Consider

Could that mean people who tend to be more rational don’t have kids when they stop to consider?

yeah yeah, corelation doesn’t equal causation yeah yeah, I can hope right?

I am glad that you posted this. A couple of months back, I started a discussion about about single mothers. I was trying to figure out why single motherhood has skyrocketed in the past few decades, despite the fact that abortion has been legal that entire time. With legal abortion, I expected that single parenthood would decline, rather than escalate.

The answers that I received were not entirely satisfying. I felt that there was something missing. A couple of good answers were the relative ease of getting uncontested divorce, and the fact that single motherhood had become more socially acceptable. But I didn't feel that this sufficiently explained the prevalence of single motherhood.

But this fills out the explanation pretty well. People see not having children as atypical and wrong. So no matter how much a woman believes that she has a right to choose an abortion, social prejudices say that not having children is atypical and wrong. So no matter how much she believes in her right to choose, she is still likely to be left with the feeling of doing something wrong, if she doesn't have children.

At last, I feel like I have satisfying answers to my question.

I had no idea how to be a father, so having children wasn't in the cards. I married a woman with two children and we talked about this beforehand. She observed me around the boys and decided I wasn't a person, so we got hitched.

I get a pity party when I tell people I have no kids.

Then I listen to them moan that their kids never call and never visit - and soon I find they have been whisked away and stashed in an old folks home.

Then I pity them....

I was on a twenty year world tour when most people are raising kids. I was having too much fun to spawn.

Yeah, all my cousins give me all screwy faced looks every time I refuse to hold any of their babies. My excuse is like, "Oh I don't wanna break it", to which I'll get the general reply, "Oh we don't know anything about parenting, either. It won't bite.". That's okay ~ looks at me weird.   Undecided
Sorry. Not only do I not want to change the shitty diapers Sick  , and put up with the inevitable teenage idiocy  Facepalm , of my own children, I don't want your lil shit machine to upchuck on my shirt, or try to sneak out their bedroom window as I'm preteen-sitting them!  Hmm

If thunking out more bundles of money drainage is your thing, you do you, but stop with the dirty looks, please! Dodgy

I ran into these attitudes back in 1992, when I told a few coworkers I didn't want children.

In many cases, the desire to remain childless results from an awareness of the over-population and climate change problems, which means it's a morally derived motivation.  As for fulfillment, it depends on what you think you need.

I have mostly been oblivious of this issue for some years now, since I somehow fell in with a fair number of other childless people.

Now, I’ll admit I haven’t ruled out kids completely. As I get older and see pictures of my grandparents with me as a small child I desparately want that for my parents, but that’s as far as my want to have kids goes. If you ask me, having kids to make other people happy is a pretty awful idea, so I’m stuck at no way for now.

I remember feeling this way at a very young age too. Didn’t want to play with baby dolls, couldn’t understand or relate to most other kids.

I can’t even function with fewer than 5hrs of sleep as of right now. Go months or years with mostly sleepless nights? No thanks. Be forced to socialize with other parents because our kids get along? Fuck off. I can’t even hardly keep the house clean as it is with two cats, add kids and this place becomes a health and safety hazard!

For as long as I could contemplate it, I never felt like parenthood was in the cards for me. I simply don’t have the temperament for it.

I can also get behind the consensus here that the world is going to shit in no small part due to the twin devils of resource depletion and climate change, and don’t care to exacerbate the problem by putting my spawn in the mix.

Just playing Devil’s Advocate here, but you could always do the adoption thing if you still want to experience the joys of fatherhood. Technically speaking, that’s still an acceptable choice inside anti-natalist circles like ours here. Wink

There are two things I always have had little use for in or out of my house: dogs and kids. They're both noisy, they get on my nerves and they smell bad. People who are morally outraged about my lifestyle can go fuck themselves. Double Finger

Fun to read the responses. I thought I wanted kids but my wife wasn’t ready with her demanding career so we postponed the conversation until we had been married 15 years! Then we suffered for one entire year discussing it thinking it was now or never, we came to the conclusion that if we couldn’t pull the trigger after that long it was best to forget it. We forgot it and are happy as hell about it.

The best thing anyone can do for the environment is not to have kids.
The best thing one can do for their pocketbook is not to have kids.

I hate when folks ask me if I have any children, why would you ask anyone that? I keep my cool and say no without any explanation. I do lose my cool when they want to know why, then I say, “Well, that’s between my wife and I, isn’t it?” This usually embarrasses them.

It's old news to me. I must admit that I'm (somewhat) outraged by people deciding to have kids - bringing the new life into this crappy world isn't something that I find moral. What pain me the most is poor people deciding to have kids - I grew in povert and no ammount of dumb talk about how parents love is more important than money fly with me.
There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.

I often find it easier just to tell people that I can't have children. No one ever asks why.

Maybe if I could have children I would want them, I don't know. Either way, because I can't have them I can't allow myself to want them otherwise that would just be depressing.

I can't say that I ever particularly had a drive to breed. Although once I met my husband I could start to see the appeal of having them.

But then I see little boys being really loud and aggressive in a shop and think Eurgh!

Actually that's what fucked me off about my 30's. I found that I could no longer make any friends because everyone my age were having children and only socialising with other parents. Before I started role playing again, the last time I made a real life friend was 14 years ago. And by that I mean someone I could socialise and meet up with out of work hours.
