Stock market skid intensifies, erasing 2018 gains for Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq

The selling pressure was again focused in the hard-hit technology sector, where shares of all the so-called FAANG stocks -- Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google parent Alphabet -- were all lower. All five stocks, which had been leading the market higher during the bull market, are now down more than 20 percent from their highs in the past year, which puts them in bear-market territory. The biggest decliners are Facebook, which has been hounded by data privacy issues, down more than 40 percent from its recent peak, and Netflix, which is off nearly 38 percent.

After a long period where investors made money by buying stocks after a sizable swoon -- a strategy known as "buying the dips" -- that strategy is no longer working, adds Joe Quinlan, chief market strategist at U.S. Trust.

"Investors are not buying the dips," he told USA TODAY.

The age of buyback fever is yet another thing that is probably going to completely dink us all. Here is a very good article about the collateral damage of buyback fever. The economy is cooling, and I am really wondering to what extent buyback fever has been leveraged.

I'm sorry. It's a nerve-wracking time for retired people who are depending on the value of their assets.  Losses in value are a double whammy for anyone who is taking disbursements from their portfolio.

Looking at the daily changes will drive you nuts. Pull 1 and 5 year results, you'll freak out a whole lot less.

I was repairing the Honeywell versions of all that in 1989 in the Army. Someone convinced Uncle Sam back in 1964 to sign off on a 40-year maintenance contract for all that crap. 35 years later, they were still using it because the cost of repair (as well as buying out that contract) was less than the cost of replacement. Sad I would have loved to be the guy who got the replacement contract in 2004. I would imagine it's the last job he ever had to bid. Smile

I'm retired and started spending it. I actually stayed in the market well past the normal comfort level (regarding age) and rode it up until it started fluctuating. I just have CDs now. I am too old for that shit, I had a really good run, having bought when the internet bubble hit. Now it's time to relax about it, but I still watch a bit.

I assume you are with both feet in the market?

No! Hookers only get me misdemeanors. Got to retain my right to vote.

No, you heard correctly.  I have seen more than one story that it’s the worst December since 1931. The story cited was for a week, not the whole month.
god, ugh

I have to hand it to my money peops. They've moved a fair amount of my money out of the riskier stocks over the past several months. More cash on hand (which I'm not needing to tap into, yet) so that it doesn't go down the rabbit hole.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.
