I've been getting vaccinated annually. The last three jobs I had over the last decade all covered it with their insurance.

Now that I'm on a remote reservation, I have to see if those are available in the nurse's office, or if I need to drive into town to get one. Also, we're currently on traveler's insurance, which almost certainly won't cover that; we aren't eligible for Ontario's insurance until we've been here three months. So, I have to see what that would cost out of pocket.

I ALWAYS have the injection site get hot and incredibly sore. Like, can't sleep that night and sometimes even the next night because my whole arm hurts so bad.  This year was the first time that didn't happen.  Wasn't ache-y in the least.  AND Harris Teeter not only gave me my flu shot for free, they gave me a $5 coupon for there at the same time.  So it was like getting paid to get the shot.  I made hubby get one the next day.  We got free ice cream and candy bars.

I drive by Teeter 4 times a day....usually do shopping online and pick up at the store, but I will drag the teenagers in with me this week.

Got stuck yesterday. The lady at the VA seemed happy to see somebody willingly come to the Flu Clinic. When I left I added some information to her sign, "Flu Prevention Clinic".

I see a couple of different doctors myself this month. I shouldn't have any trouble getting a flu shot.

I came down with the flu only once in my lifetime, and that was when I was a senior in high school. It was a particularly virulent strain. I was sick and delirious for over two weeks and lost about 20 pounds. I've been getting a flu shot every year since then and have remained healthy through each flu season.

On the other hand, why wouldn't you want to immunize yourself against any form of influenza we can? People who don't worry about the flu should remember that pneumonia can tag along. Last December I was fighting to breathe in an oxygen tent. I'm still being treated for the after-effects of that shit.

But, hey, if a little prick bothers you... (However, I had a friend, Andre, who was a serious warrior, almost as crazy as I was, who fainted when he got a shot. Four of us escorted him to Sick Bay for the stabbing when required.)

In late February of 2009 I started to feel a bit off one Sunday afternoon.  By Monday morning I was wretchedly ill, running a fever and coughing up nasty stuff.  Apparently one of my co-workers (probably the one who had just come back from a vacation in Mexico) had signed me up for a beta test of H1N1 -- or as I like to call it, the Mesopotamian Death Flu. 

I was pretty much bedridden for three weeks.  The only good thing about the experience is that I finally got around to reading Watchmen and Terry Pratchett's Lords and Ladies -- although that made the experience 1000% more surreal.  It took another six weeks, some antibiotics, and a hot yoga class to finally get over the trifecta of flu, pneumonia and bronchitis and get my energy back.

That fall I got a flu shot for the first time ever, and haven't missed a year since.  I work in healthcare and rush over to our flu shot clinic within a day or two of it opening, to give my body lots of time to make antibodies.

I had a similar experience.  I started feeling not too well in the morning but within three hours I couldn't get out of bed. My kids were 3 and 5 at the time  and I couldn't get out of bed to take care of them.  I managed to phone my husband at work and begged him to  PLEEEEEASE come home and take care of his children so  I could die in bed in peace.  I'd heard people say when you get the flu it feels like you've been hit by a Mack truck and I used to think people were  exaggerting but I found out they weren't.  It took me almost 3 months to start feeling normal again.

My family doctor told me that contracting  the flu gives you immunity for a couple of years  but I didn't want to chance it so I've gotten a flu shot every year since then.

You don't get immunity against the new strain(s) that comes along every year by getting a prior strain. This is why the say to get vaccinated every year, the current vaccine is developed to fight the flu they're expecting. They have fair success at that.

And recovery time gets longer as you get older. I had flu and double pneumonia in December and I didn't feel fully recovered until August.

Yeah, can't develop vaccines against viruses we haven't identified. That's probably what got me, a rogue strain.
