Victims of Abuse by Religious Order Priests Say Their Claims Fall Through the Cracks


When Larry Antonsen decided to report a priest who sexually abused him during high school, he believed the Archdiocese of Chicago was the right place to go.

Mr. Antonsen and his wife were lifelong churchgoers who sent their children to Sunday school and counted themselves as members of a parish in the archdiocese. The priest Mr. Antonsen was accusing had spent 14 years working at Chicago-area Catholic high schools.

But Mr. Antonsen, who is now 72, said reporting the allegations dropped him into a maze of church bureaucracy, in which his accusations were passed from one office to another before being quietly set aside.

Jesuit School, Others Settle Haiti Sex Abuse Case for $60M



More than 130 people who say they were sexually abused as children at a now-defunct charity school in Haiti have reached a $60 million settlement with a Jesuit university in Connecticut and other defendants. 

The settlement was announced Friday and must be approved by a federal judge in Hartford.

Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said during a Fox News Channel appearance on Saturday, “I certainly understand the outrage and the anger” of those calling for Cuomo, a Catholic who was once an altar boy, to be excommunicated.

Catholic Church in Texas Names Nearly 300 Priests Accused of Sex Abuse

“The bishops of Texas have decided to release the names of these priests at this time because it is right and just and to offer healing and hope to those who have suffered,” the cardinal said. “On behalf of all who have failed in this regard, I offer my sincerest apology. Don't know about other religions but Christians, yes, a handful of the right "forgive me" prayers does get them off the religious hook (the Church will get them off the secular hook), and the really pernicious thing is they know that before they commit their crimes.
