Baseball - Vivian Darkbloom - 05-23-2019

I'm calling it today, as they destroy the Angels, that the Minnesota Twins will win the World Series this year.

Anyone for friendly wagers?

Defend your team.

RE: Baseball - Minimalist - 05-23-2019

The Angels?  You mean Mike Trout and the 24 Nobodies?

RE: Baseball - no one - 05-23-2019

Won't be the Twins.

Say that to Albert's face.

Probably not, but I'm optimistic.

Who, then, will it be?

RE: Baseball - julep - 05-23-2019

Won't be the Cubs.

Dangit.

If the Cubs won the Series, it would be a sure precursor of Armageddon, so by playing down they are secretly winning for the world.

...how's that?

Still got a bat, dude.

And Simmons is one of the best shortstops in the game (yeah yeah, he's injured)

RE: Baseball - Minimalist - 05-23-2019

If my team ever gets off the Disabled List I'll let you know.

Meanwhile....

I just like the, um, shirt.

RE: Baseball - no one - 05-23-2019

On paper it's the Astros or Dodgers. The season is long though. I want the Yankees to win. They're doing well with so many injuries. If they get back to full force they will have a good chance. As long as the pitching can hold up. The Twins just can't beat the Yankees in the playoffs. Boston is tough too. Baseball is full of surprises. It's not really who is the best team over all, but which is the best team in that day.

They're, what, ten games over .500? If they get through that division, why not them?

RE: Baseball - brewerb - 05-23-2019

I haven't paid attention to baseball for years. Used to be an Orioles fan but see that backing them wouldn't all that bright.

I'll go with the Astros because of George Jetson.

True, the Twins have always wilted against the Yanks, but that was the Joe Mauer Twins. This year's team is like none I've ever seen. Could be a Royals-like amazing year or two.

Need to sign an experienced starter with playoff experience. Keuchal?

If I was an optimist, I could see 10 games over .500 as a path to the Series.  But the Cubs don't work on an optimism/pessimism scale; no matter the talent or odds, defeat is pulled from Victory's jaws.  I agree with Mike Royko's classic assessment:   “A Pessimist sees the glass as half empty; A Cub Fan wonders when it's gonna spill.”

RE: Baseball - c172 - 05-24-2019

I live in Padreland. I went to a game a few years ago on Organ Transplant Awareness night, because that's important to me. Lots by over a touchdown to the Brewers that night. I need to check again, but it seems like we started off wonderfully (as expected after a huge signing), but have fallen off the wagon.

I kinda wonder how our farm team, the Sod Poodles, are faring.

RE: Baseball - no one - 05-24-2019

I have to say, Tony Gwynn is the best hitter of my lifetime, bar none.

RE: Baseball - Minimalist - 05-24-2019

Willie Mays was the best player I ever saw live.

RE: Baseball - Dānu - 05-24-2019

Way too early to be making any predictions. I'm not placing any bets. I'm excited at how well the Twins are doing, but realize how quickly things can turn in this game. We've had few big injuries this year, but it wouldn't take many injuries to key players to see it all come tumbling down. Garver is already out. What if Castro or Astudillo were to be sidelined, and then Polanco, and then Odorizzi or Berrios? Things could get ugly in a hurry.

RE: Baseball - Minimalist - 05-24-2019

It's almost impossible for a baseball to stay hot for 162 games.  It is truly a marathon and not a sprint.

I thought that might have lessened after you guys actually won a WS. Most Minnesota sports fans sound the same.

Ah, yes, 2016: the Cubs won the Series and Orange Horseman won the White House.  I'm woefully hopeful that the Cubs will revert to form this year and next--and a good thing, too.

RE: Baseball - Minimalist - 05-24-2019

Royko was a national treasure.

Quote:“Show me somebody who is always smiling, always cheerful, always optimistic, and I will show you somebody who hasn't the faintest idea what the heck is really going on.”

― Mike Royko

RE: Baseball - Vivian Darkbloom - 10-08-2019

Well, shit. Same old Twins.

Should we get some good pitchers? Nah.
